How far can you push the stock tune?

Been tossing up for a while to either replace the turbo or the ex. cam.

Mainly after more torque over anything, but curious how far the stock ecu can be pushed to allow me to do anything.

btw, SSG auto model.

I wouldn't think the pump would become an issue unless you're really strangling the ponies.
But i could be wrong.

I would suspect 1bar boost would e ok, as seem to be confirmed above.

beyond that I've no clue.
First time modding an engine with factory ecu...

IMO if you want to up the boost to 1bar, you should re-wire the stock pump at a bare minimum! 1 bar is on the limit for TD04's tho- really needs a TD05 to keep the efficiency levels at a decent rate.

If you have to do a timing belt change, some VR4 cams is a worthwhile upgrade, and if you havent already, a FMIC and trans cooler is where i'd be going first.

Yeah, I was going to replace the turbo, and then go 1 bar, but as said still tossing up.

The replacement cams, i know what they do, but is there any benefit of retarding the exhaust on the stock cam?
Think ours normally is 252? could be wrong.

I read often when people go larger cams, aka 272, then they may ret about 8deg? I think.... but doesn't that just give you more up top???

Being SSG i can not guaranty but I've heard of some HSG pushing around 18psi before they hit boost cut. Now on the other side I've been doing some testing on stock HSG auto with only a K&N filter stock replacement and full 3" exhaust. 15psi is no problem but with stock ECU I did dattalog a lot of knocks which caused a lot of timing being pulled off. I could feel that car becomes flat in power above 4500rpm.
After that I did a bit of tuning with ostrich and with leaner fuel and tuned timing, top end became a lot stronger and not many knock count readings.

Well mine is next to stock, on a list all I have is
K&N panel filter
3" turbo back

Everything else is bog stock, and probably worn out.
I plan on replacing the o2 sensors, plugs, leads and cat before I go ahead with mods.

As this is the daily drive I don't want to start hacking at the ecu and dropping in $$$ parts. Atleast not at the moment :p
Just want a bit more out of it in the end.

I suppose having the auto box rebuilt should go on the cards also.

Hi, I have a 97 HSG and I have it running 18.5psi with a walbro, still running very rich, hits boost cut @ 19psi. (made 169kw @ all 4 [stock ecu]) :)

.....3 inch exhaust and filter (19 psi hits boost cut on dyno, 18.5 is sweet with rich afr's)
