hi guys, how can a person go about removing the cat on my car? or would guttin it be just as effective? and will it throw a check engine light?

i wouldnt punch it out as it would be illegal and wouldnt help that much in flow anyway. ide just buy a new 3' cat and get rid if that hot dog muffler behind the cat in the pic. the cat helps with catching all the black soot that come from your exuast if you get rid of it it would put all the black soot up the back of your car and polute that crap into the air.

Is it for racing purposes? or daily driving?

Keep the cat if your driving it on the street, but when you go racing, remove the sucker as it restricts the exhaust quite significantly!

You could just make a straight race pipe which basiaclly has 2 flanges welded onto some pipe the same diametre of your exhaust.

If you gut the cat, that could work, but you'll be hurting the environment

Are you kidding!!?? I'd almost bet on a 10 kw increase in power if you ripped that puppy off.

Yes it will throw the CEL, but as long as you earth the white wire that goes to it- you can see it in the pic, just left to the cat.

Don't forget it not illegal in all countries to remove a cat converter. Take it to an exhaust shop, where ther'll cut it out, and then weld a new pipe into place. Alternatively, buy a 3" cat, gut it, then weld a pipe straight though it

Ok weigh this up:

Gut it for an additional 10kw and risk a $10,000 EPA fine + bad for the environment + releasing poisonous gasses into the air to breathe (think of the kiddies);
or
Keep it legit with cleaner air and lose a measly 10kw...

If you want to gain an extra 10kw add a decent CAI, some extra boost or get a bigger turbo :p

check his location - he's in canada.

so the laws aren't necessarily the same.

as for the polution - that's a conscience issue, if you only use the car on odd weekends and for racing it's probably not so much of an issue.

at the moment here it's fkn freezing - so bring on the global warming i say!

so dre your saying you would punch out your cat for 10kws?? not worth it as rob said not worth the fine.

Yes this does seem to be quite a bit of an issue-

What I say is that if everyone REALLY cared about the environment, then we'd all become vegetarians/vegans, because all the cow shit in the world produces more harmful gases than any car ever would.

Then there's the cars that run externals to the atmosphere- I cant remember anyone ever actually copping that $10,000 fine in my whole entire life!? You could play dumb and say "I didn't know- the last owner put that exhaust on". I really can't see how they could push the $10k fine in court. Any schmuck of a lawyer could get you off that one IMO. What about motorsport? Should we be banning top fuel dragsters?

hahaha dre all u wanna do is push the limits dont you.... just cos u dont care about our environment doesnt mean we dont!!!! hahaha 8)

Its not that I don't care- its just why should I? Look at all the big business who has the government in their back pockets- they pollute more than a car with no cat does- and they're immune from prosecution!

Whats good for the goose, is good for the gander IMO

Disclaimer: all of my cars have stock exhausts

 stock exhausts my ass. $10,000 is the max fine from the EPA for intentionally removing the internals of a catalytic converter. Thing is, why bother? there's plenty other ways to gain a few extra kw especially nowadays where there are several high flowing cats on the market that will probably get you 7 out of that 10kw back. Fair enough we drive fuel guzzling turbos but the effects of a proper functioning catalytic converter gives off much less pollutants than the the old leaded fuel which causes lead poisoning in the human body. Add carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides to the equation and what they've been saying for years is true - 'we are all slowly killing ourselves!' The whole idea of catalytic converters is flow exhaust gases through a platinum grid causing a chemical reaction that reduces the amount of pollutants in the air that we breathe. I dont know about some of you guys, but I cant consciously drive a car everyday without a cat in it just for the sake of a few measly extra kw :p Just one extra psi of boost should make up for it

Its true! All stock! :) I Dont even drive a turbocharged car (at the moment)

While I understand what you're saying Rob, you also have to understand that we also do live in the age where everyone are tight asses, and they want the best bang for buck, and removing the cat provides this.

If you want to be fair, then why doesn't every car (regardless of type or use) have one? Why do some countries have a law where you have to run them, and some don't? How come it took so long for Australia to ratify the Kyoto protocol? These are all hard questions to answer, I know. What it comes down to, is whether or not you're prepared to run the risk. Ignorance is bliss, and I seriously doubt they could make that fine stick, which is why they make it $10,000- to scare everyone into not doing it.

If the government were REALLY serious about emissions, then they'd do what the yanks are doing in some states (eg Cali) and have compulsory emissions testing every year (or however long it is)

And WTF is Chewbacca doing on Endor?? It simply just does not make sense! I claim the emancipation proclomation and want the court to equit. Why?? because it simply DOES-NOT-MAKE-SENSE!!

Its more of a deterrent I guess and you'd have to be busted doing it more than once to get the full brunt of the fine. I hope those tight asses out there gutting their cats on their daily driver rethink what they've done though

The USA still haven't agreed to the Kyoto thing, and they produce more pollution from automobiles in one day than New Zealand (and probably Aussie as well) in a whole year

Call me selfish and pessimistic (fatalistic?) but i'm pretty confident mankind will wipe itself out long before pollution becomes enough of a problem to do so. *shrug*

Both my daily's have cats, but only because I can't be arsed removing them (if they ever need replacing it'll certainly be with straight pipe).

dont say that dre i dont want to be getting pink slips or green slips every year as well as exuast emissions tests.

just have a cat with flanges on it for the street and a straight pipe the same size for the track that way when you want the extra ponies you have them and when just driving around you do your bit for the rock we live on
