a mate of mine is looking at buying a genuine evo 2. the problem is how can we be sure its a genuine evo?

do all genuine ones have a 'yellow plate' and what is the VIN number of a real one. anything else to keep an eye out for?

thanks

recaro seats
non fibreglass bumpers / wings etc
alloy bonnet
7bolt motor (silver rocker cover, not red)
big16g turbo...

these are the obvious things....

as for vin, do a search.. i think its been discussed here before...
jstyle has an evo2 but dressed as an evo3 i think...
give him a pm

or even give afas a call

There's heaps of differences/things to look out for that have been covered many a time. Go to the lancer register (www.lancerregister.com) and download the Evo buyers guide.

As for rego, it is possible for a genuine car to not have a gold import plate (ie be a personal import), but these were all via legal loopholes (mostly in Vic) that are now shut and if im not mistaken are being cracked down.

So yes, you want a gold plate on the firewall. As for VIN/rego the car will be rego'd as the year it was imported (ie my E2 is down as a 2001 Lancer), and the VIN usually (from the coulpe I've seen) contains the chassis number as part of it.

Ask to see all the import papers, the previous owner should have them all.

CD9A = evo1, CE9A = evo2,3. also the turbo is a normal 16G .. only the evo3's came with the big16G compressors.

it'd have the plates around the front tower, and a "X" brace behind the rear seats.

hope this helps.

We've been over this before... 4 times.

CD9A = E1 AND E2

CE9A = E3 Only.

All three evo's come with "Big 16G" Compressors, the E3 comes with what's termed an e316g which I believe has a 7cm dump instead of 6cm. Is this the only difference baz/dre?

Um, no, he was right.

CD9A = Evo 1 (the D is the wheelbase code. 2500mm IIRC)
CE9A = Evo 2 AND 3 (Wheelbase 2510mm)

From what I've read, E1 and 2 came with what has been called a "small" 16G (TD05H-16G-7), and the 3 the "big" 16G (TD05H-16G6-7). Only difference is the larger compressor wheel on the 3.

BUT, I have not taken these turbo's apart, seen them side by side, etc, and I do know that some people in the UK and NZ say that E2's do have the so-called "big" 16G turbo.

So does your yellowplated e2 read CD9A or CE9A because 94 Evo's (e2) according to Japanese CAPS still read CD9A.

Wheelbase changes or not, I'd be interested to see a photo of your firewall.

It has a CE9A chassis number. Not sure what your on about with CAPS either as my car was built 94.02.3 and in the menu's CD9A has in brackets at the end 93M, as in 1993 and manual (its no. 20), and CE9A has 94,95M.

Try as I might, I could not get a chassis number with CD9A to give a 94 built date.

And for those that need pictures to believe anything, look below. I could show a whole lot of import papers too, but trust me, I know that I'm right (at least in this case :wink: )

all e2 and e3's are ce9a, your best bet is to get the chasis number of the evo2 your looking to buy and get mitsi to run it through there computer they can tell every detail about the car or check the tag on the seatbelt that will tell you production date 94 = evo2

Lorrie, as above, E1's are CD9a's. E2 and 3 are CE9a, havent we been through this before?

E1's have small 16g's. Steve Murch (MHI turbo god) has led me to believe that E2's have big 16g's.

My old Evo2 was a CE9A.... And the E DOES represent the wheel base spec.

Evo2's also have cast front lower control arms, Front swaybar that mounts off the front struts, rear fog lights (GSR model), bottom lip on front bar and the recaros don't have a separate headrest (Evo1 recaros do)
