just got all the leaks fixed on my vr4, so i thought, ok i will take it for a run round the block, it was coughing a spluttering and not going very far at all considerin i had my foot to the floor just to stop it from stalling, it kept on backfiring and the like, so i went to pull it back on the drive and it died.

now i know that the power steering is leaking again after i had just fixed it, and it leaked into the alternator so that is now fucked, but i can't understand all the backfiring and the lack of power, unless the connections on the new afm aren't connecting properley...

the other thing was when it was only the drive the highest i could revv it to was 3000 and then it would stall when i tried to move up the slight hill.

i am about to give up on this car and get someone else to fix all the problems with it. but i know that is going to cost a shiet load.

you guys know more about the running of these things, i only know how to strip the engine and put it back together. so all help is welcomed with open arms

Let me know when to drop around again Craig.
I might even bring the Galant since the Dunnydore wagon offends you

I have a suspicion as to what is happening but I want to throw the logger on it to make sure.

come round on friday if you want tim, i will have to get the battery onto charge coz the alternator is focked i do believe

Faaaaaaaaaaaaark..youre definently persistent

How long since youve had the VR4 on the road running?

All the best

No worries Craig, you might want to at least try spraying the alt with a non-conductive cleaner to see if that might clean some of the ps fluid out.

think you might find the car will be ok when alternator is replaced. the oil in the windings will cause a fairly decent short. droping the battery voltage below the level at which the computer shuts down.

had this happen on a corolla.......smoke coming out of the alternator as the oil burned out. new alternator good as new

it was running rough as well and veeerrry rich. which makes me think that it doesn't know how much air is getting in so running rich to compromise. i think that the connections on the afm are dodgy, so i will change them tomorrow.

Cheers

low voltage to the computer or the ignition circuit can cause this too.......my suggestion is to change one ting at a time. alternator first

i usually start with the cheapest thing first, yes the alternator is probably fucked, but i don't think that it is the only problem, $3 for a pack of crimp terminals or $3 for some solder is alot cheaper than $300 for an alternator

could you borrow an alternator? also check the big fuse I think it might be 80a....it may now be blown.

Definatly your alternator man, mine did the same thing.

coughed and spluttered and eventually died in the kfc driveway, alternator cant keep the battery charged and cant send ignition to the coils causing it to run like a dead wombat and eventually dieing in the ass end.

new alternator and she was running good as new...until the gbox decided to go...then the gear cable...o the joys.!!!

and fark nearly 2 years of no vr4 man, how do you controll your urges to not smash the thing with a big hammer!!!

Craig, You can also get your alternator overhauled by Auto Electrician. Should be good as new and should cost a fair bit less than $300 I would think..
Just a thought..

the alternator is fine, just the pump is leaking, will get one from a wreckers this week, also have to change the o2 sensor aye tim...are the evo 3 ones the same thread etc as the vr4 ones, as i have an evo3 turbo and dump

Yep, they are the same thread Craig.
Another thought that I had is that you might want to try blocking the bov as it is vented atm. (block it only to test )
This combined with the larger injectors and afm with no fuel management may be causing it to run pig-rich.

wouldn't that only have an effect when the throttle is shut off quickly i.e the valve opens, under normal operating conditions the valve is closed so it wont be leaking air out
