Hi guy's,
I don't have much experience with pulling gearbox's apart so I thought I'd do a bit of research first.

Basically I was just after some pointers on installing an LSD into a F5M22 CB GSR Gearbox.

What special tool would be needed? Can someone post up an expanded view of the gearbox, Where can I get different sized shims, And what else should I do while the box is apart?

Any help is appreciated.

cheers,
Dave

ok well Ive given it a clean, drained the fluid taken the cover off and now what?

Aaahhhh Don't know why I didn't think of VFAQ earlier.. Excellent.

Now the only other thing I need is a shim kit. Where would one purchase such a thing. :)

Interesting read Vfaq is.. If those two big bolts in the picture above are slightly loose, it would result in a wobbly gear lever and gear change's won't be as smooth.

Sorry that I can't offer you much assistance mate as I didn't happen to install my LSD, but I can assure you that once it's installed and run in, you will never look back. I think that it's the best mod that you can perform in a FWD...

Should be pretty much the same setup.

Hey doommachine, regarding that writeup about the quaife LSD install, what does the guy mean when he says "speedo drive ring gear"?
I have no idea what it even looks like, and I can't really make out anything from the pics in the writeup.
Do you know where I could find such a thing?
I'm ordering a quaife LSD from NZ for my VR4'd GGSR with FWD locked W5M33 gearbox so it looks like I need one of these thingy's.

Any help would be much appreciated. :)

EDIT: Oh, ok I just saw those pics posted up by mrcyborg.
That pretty much explains what it is then.
I'd have thought the new LSD would come with it.
Anyways, does anyone know where I can get it?

Thanks.:)

If you've ordered a Quiafe for it, you won't need one of these insert thingies.

I've also hit another little snag. What's a good way to take off the bearings?
I think my bearing puller might be too big, but I can't seem to pull it out evenly.

when i've pulled bearings from my box, theres been a few ways.

oh and dont think the bearing will be re-usable afterwards either :)

first way: use a puller on the bearing case (bit that holds the bearings onto the carrier) and crank it till it bends and breaks or the carrier moves enough to get the puller under it.

second way: remove the bearing case and all the rollers (side cutters) and use a bearing separator under the actual carrier to lift the carrier up enough to use the puller.

third: this is my new preffered way now :) remove the case and rollers, then use a dremel with a cut of wheel to put four slices/slots in the carrier, being careful not to cut into the actually seat but as deep and big as you can make the cuts into the carrier. then i just grab a chisel and smack it into each slot i made, this widen the carrier enough to pull off the seat with your fingers.

the bearings themselves can be brought brand new for around $30 each from a specialist bearing supplier, so long as you take the race with you (has the NSK part number) they will get you the same part.

getting them on is so much easier.

hey im new to this forum im a second year apprentcie mechanic in ipswich the 3rd way that was just noted is the qucikest if u dont have access too a hydraulic press and bearing seperator but the 3rd way can also cut into the shaft the bearing has come off if your not careful ive rebuild a f5m22 box at work for my gsr its simple if youve got the right tools
