Something for the gearbox gurus that I found interesting B) :
My brother in law picked up an ex-rally EVO III gearbox over the weekend from a compeditor who has since moved onto racing EVO 9s.
The teeth on the 4th gearset were munched which put some nice crap throughout the box, although some parts are still salvagable thanks to a little addition inside the gearbox.
What captured my interest is what the rally boys did to the gearbox to help guard the output pinion from destruction. They installed screen filters using mesh, allen key bolts and some wire. It looked like it did its job too because the ouput pinion was not damaged, nor was the front diff crownwheel. It kept a lot of the small-large debris away from the pinion which is pretty good if you're rallying and need to drive your ass back to the pits from the middle of nowhere  I suppose anything that saves some of these parts from being destroyed is worth considering.
The box had obviously been rebuilt previously as I saw some damage there from a previous failure inside the casing. ie sandwich plate under 5th gear had damage and also some around the inside of the casing around the front diff crownwheel. No evidence that the 5th gear or front diff crownwheel were damaged during this teardown though so they are remnants probably from a previous failure (possibly thereafter the screens were fitted).
The OEM filter screen inside the EVO gearbox (above the front diff) caught a lot of the gunk as well. Without these type of screens in place I'd say the damage would have been a lot worse/expensive to replace.
Anyway, here's a link to some photos I've taken to show you the extra screens and damage to the 4th gearset B) : http://flickcabin.com/public/viewset/27488
