Today I decided to change my O2 housing to an aftermarket one for better flow etc and the guy who I had helping me accidentally broke off one of the bolts that goes into the turbo so I had to pull it all out to have it drilled out and re-tapped. While having the turbo out, I noticed the fins or blades didn't look like most stock turbo ones so I decided to snap a pic and ask you guys. Is this a stock 16G turbo???

no

An evo 3's standard turbo is a big 16G

evo 1 and 2's standard turbo is a small 16G (smaller compressor wheel than the evo3 16G )

Cool...Thanks. My car is an Evo I (CD9A) so if I am understanding what you are saying correctly, they swapped the stock 16G for a big 16G seeing the Evo I only came with the 16G :)

Here's what I have to deal with tomorrow. This is the broken off piece.

It would sure seem that way, the P/N on the compressor housing is a big 16g (small is 49178-01460)

Not a bad score :)

Yeah...I seemed to have lucked out a bit with this car. The car I found out after I bought it had a cusco differential in it! :D

Thanks...Know of any good places I can check to look into one? I figure if I have to change that, I may as well change the turbo

Since you're in the bahama's you can actually source a brand new 16g through extremepsi cheaper than it is ex australia. But you'll get much better service from Mark @ GT Pumps.

It seems that Evo 1 and 2's got a lucky dip as far as small and big 16g's go.
I have an Evo 1 turbo and it is a Big 16g.
Weird.

Looks like it's an Evo3 turbo going by the number on the comp cover.

49178-01450 = evo 1 16g
49178-01460 = evo 2 16g
49178-01470 = evo 3 16g

I have an Evo 1 and Evo 2 turbo's, both of which are big 16G's. (take the comp cover off and measure the exducer diameter - 68mm = big 16G).

Yup, don't believe people when they say that Evo Is and IIs ONLY came with small 16Gs. Ive seen both Evo I and Evo II turbos with Big 16Gs and a mate of mine has the documentation to prove ALL Evo I - III RS's were homolgated with big 16G compressors. I'd hazard a guess that some Evo I GSRs had small 16Gs, but not all.
