Kia Cerato 2005 - Oil sludge build-up

Hi guys
after repeatedly struggling with refilling the missus' Kia when doing an oil change, I finally decided to bite the bullet and take a good look.
From the outside, I could see a baffle plate of sone kind right beneath the filler hole, obstructing flow.

The below pictures show why there was such an issue. An extended period of neglect before I came on the scene may have caused this.
Is this a normal build-up? Has anybody come across before?
To me it seems horrendous on such a late model car being 2005 with only 130k's on it.

I spent an hr and a half cleaning out all the sludge from the rocker cover and removed the baffle plate, cleaned and replcaed it.

check out the build up on the cam rocker caps too - nasty!

a side question, this is the Theta or Theta II 'global' engine used in Hyundai etc, so is it the same mounting as Mitsubishi 4G's then?

I work for KIA, Mits and proton up here in Newcastle, i have seen these engines do this before from miss servicing. The best way to fix this is to use engine flush every service. Try putting 2 bottles in when the engine is hot and take it for a drive for 15-20 mins and then drop the oil. It might take a few service's to get it clean again but always use engine flush before changing the oil. I have always used it and have never had any problems with sludge build up.

The bottom end is designed of a 4g i think....

Old oil does it.
It seems like CASTROL GTX oil likes to do the sludge thing also. What oil has it been using?

Also, overheating can also cook up the oil in the engine.
 
Wow that bad Ive seen pics from oil companies, (of what you don't want) now ive seen it in practice :unsure:

Ive always wondered with the oil flush, does it break down the lubricating properties of the oil while its in there, would engine wear be an issue while it's in the oil?
My motor looks nothing like that, but if i ever did use it, id do the flush then dump it, put in some cheap(ish) oil, run it for a minute, then dump again and top it up with the oil i'm using. All oil have detergents but im just skeptical wiht such a strong one. Do you have any more info to give on the oil flushes?
Every company that sell it just says its fine. Of course.
Just fishing for another opinion....
 
another option is to drain a little oil and run about three cups of diesel oil for about a week before oil change get the temps up do heaps of driving. diesel engine oil is pretty much the same stuff it just contains more detergents. then dump and replace with fresh oil.
 
thanks Chaser - good info. I usually use a flush as well (but only one bottle). I will monitor it and see if the build-up returns again. Im thinking it should stay away since I change it frequently.

Baz - it's been running good ol Magnatec since I have been servicing it the past 3yrs. Prior to that, I have no knowledge, I would assume dealership standard.

my cousin is a qualified mechanic, and said recently his workplace dont like using oil flush at all as it can remove any metal filings from where they are bedded, in turn causing more damage. I dont know, im not convinced either way. It is interesting to hear different opinions and ideas from people in the trade and owners alike.
