Hey guys last night I noticed a nasty knocking sound on my Evo 3. It seems to be coming from the back of the engine(on the belt side). I havent lost any power, and nothing else seems amiss. I dropped the oil and refilled and it seemed a little high when I refilled, after I took it for a drive I dropped a little more out to bring the level down.

Any ideas what it could be?

how did the oil look?

what sort of knock? high pitched? low pitched? changes with rpm?

could be anything mate.

big end knock
piston knock
something loose knock
lifters possibly??

Thanks for the response, almost dead certain its not lifters, had that issue before, I always thought they were more of a tick. Low pitched I am pretty sure, I havent listened with RPM changes. Sounds alot lower down in the engine than the head, around level with the aircon compressor.

Sound is transmitted in cars - so it may not actually be coming from where it sounds like it's coming from!

Check your suspension is sitting correctly (ie springs are seated, struts are bolted in tight) and that your engine and trans mounts have not perished and something is moving where it's not supposed to move.

Yes I still have balance shafts.

Enginr: This is happening at idle without the car moving, also can get it to happen when the front end is lifted off the ground.
I also had a good crawl around under the car last night looking for leaks and or loose mounts but couldent see anything that was a knocking.

Well she has gone off to the mechanic today to see what is wrong with her. Hope its something simple because I dont want an excuse to put forged goodies into her.

hey mate i had the same problem i snaped the lil key in the crank shaft thing lol i got them replaced an now all is good it happens from dumping the clutch at take off

The keyway in the crank which keeps the cam sprocket aligned, you can check that after loosening the alt and power steering belt enough to remove harmonic balancer and you should be able to see the key once balancer is removed. Its not uncommon either mainly on older hard driven gsr's and evo's.

GL with it
