Lancer GSR rear LSD?

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

Only as an option on the rare GSR RS version but nothing too difficult for a GSR owner to substitute and own anyway.
These days you can just install the EVO 1 RS, EVO II or EVO III rear plate type LSD into the GSR rear diff housing whilst keeping the existing GSR rear diff crownwheel and pinion to maintain the 3.545 rear diff ratio. The stock GSR rear shafts slot straight in too.
Its an easy mod but I recommend getting the tooth alignment and backlash setup properly, plus new bearings before slapping it together. A differential shop may charge you around $200 if you hand over a GSR rear diff centre complete and an EVO LSD and ask them to do the work for you.

i did the change over myself, and it seems to be working.. although i have never done this before, i'm not sure how long it will last..

i put an evo 2 mech centre into my GSR housing, retaining my GSR crownwheel,

one thing i did notice was the driveshaft ends that go into the diff were completely different, so i had to use the evo shafts with the evo centre. the rest was easy... even did it with a floor jack and axle stands

Thanks for the info. What can one look for to see for sure if they have a RS or not.?

Unfortunately I live in the USA and evo 1-3 rears are not easy to find here. We did get the galant rv-4 here in 91-92. We also have the dsm's. Any idea if a LSD rear would work from either of these if done like you described using a evo 1-3 rear LSD?

The car already has a complete evo 3 motor, turbo and intercooler with 3in exhaust and ECM Link. It's going to need a LSD rear.

The RS's are pretty rare. You'll notice the chassis code is CD5A-SNDF (Build plate on the firewall - non RS is SNGF). Even so, the rear LSD in a GSR is only a viscous unit and get pretty loose with age and aren't worth the effort in my opinion. The plate/mechanical diffs are streets better. IF they came with them, a 2G DSM plate/mechanical rear LSD could do the trick and should fit in a GSR non LSD diff.
