Hey guys,

I thought I better do the routine check on my oil level. It's been about a month (maybe a bit more) since I got the car serviced, so I wasn't expecting to see the level to be low.

To my complete surprise, the oil level showed to be absolutely none! :?
How the hell could this thing use 5 litres of oil in 2000km's? The only smoke it blows is black when it's on boost, and the only leaks it has is a couple from the rocker cover gasket, and I sure as hell don't have 5 litres of oil in my engine bay. :x

mat, it will have some oil in it, the distance between the two marks on the dipstick shows only 1L, so u have probly only lost 1.5-2L of oil, put a moreys engine oil stabiliser in, and it will help to reduce oil loss

GVR40

thanks for that, makes me feel a bit more relaxed now!
I just ordered a new rocker cover gasket, half moon seal, blah blah blah from repco, so i'll fix all that up tonight. As well as topping up the new oil!
Mat :)

u got a catch can matt?
if not, maybe invest in one of those.. hopefully that oil isn't getting blown into your cooler piping etc..

what oil are you using by the way?

via the pcv and rocker cover hose..
there are 2 hoses connected to your rocker cover which goes into your intake pipe and your inlet manifold

oil will usually get blasted into your piping via those hoses..
a catch can will stop it going into your piping, but you'll still lose oil if its a ring problem..

magnatec is 15-40 right?
try 20-40, something thicker.. harder to get past the rings..

nothing plumbs back to my intake, remember? :p
the hose that used to is pointing at the ground/front quarter panel but i can't see any oil spray there.
do you remember the oil that had leaked onto the gearbox from the rocker cover?
if oil was going through the turbo into the cooler pipes, it would be burning the oil and blowing smoke wouldnt it? just on boost or off boost aswell?

actually, i remember when you took the old intake off, there was a bit of oil around the mouth of the turbo.
looks like i may have to look into one of these catch cans.
are they hard to set up? any particular type i should look for?

i just got one of these matty-san

does the trick nicely. Basically a cusco rip-off for like more than half the price. they come in 900 and 450ml. Me and Dre have a 900, and dinos old car has a 450 i think......

on the subject of catch cans, i ahve been trying to get one with a "washable breather" What are the pros and cons of the breather?

they are illegal (in Vic anyways)

of course they are breath into atmo but i will just take it off for rego, are they better then normal? is realsing gasses good for engine?

the difference wouldnt be much, all thats different is that oil vapours arent getting plumbed back into the intake, which themselves dont really affect octane levels too much

i really hate the vent to atmo ones, u get really bad fumes into the cabin..
also stains the bonnet

u could just drill holes into the top (so u cant spot it)
u could hide the catch can down low, maybe even run a breather hose to vent under the car?... or back into the exhaust which could create a vac which would help seal the rings..

get any type u think would look nice.. lots of cheapies on ebay.. they do the job well though!
