hey guys, im doing a 2lt conversion to my GSR, im having trouble lining up the motor, i can get all the engine mount and gearbox mounts on but the sub frame that goes under the gearbox wont line up, do i need to get one off an EVO?

thanks Craig

Sounds like the lower part of the radiator support is out of line. Quite often the result of a front on impact (even small ones)

A scissor jack is usefull in spreading it enough to get the holes to line up. Bolt the crossmember from the rear mounts and then work the jack til the front holes line up.

answer this is your problem

I'm using a VR4 top engine mount the L shape one,

Unless you have cut L off bush section & altered vr4 bracket to the same orientation measurements wise as Evo one it wont work or align engine up correctly in position

Original vr4 L bracket, cut shut & welded it up to the evo position will work

Vr4 engine L mount is completely different offset to evo III mount I'd say this is may be your issue.

In short yes you will need a evo mount and engine bracket (unless you have some good fabrication skills and mod the Vr4 one to suit)

passenger mount first,
then gearbox mount second,
then use a jack under engine or sump with wood to protect and
use the jack to help you line up the north south support to bolt into K-Frame at the rear and bottom of rad support at the frt.

You will find with the method above with evo passenger side engine mount and engine bracket it will almost fall into place.

Fingers crossed it hasn't had a big shove and chassis is out of alignment.

I did the cut 'n' shut L-bracket method - took a bit of fiddling to get it alinged properly and we tack welded it in place before having one of the boiler makers at work weld it up good 'n' proper.

do you guys know whats involved to change it over to an evo bracket, i heard you have to change more than just the bracket

and how do you know when the motor i inline, if using a vr4 one???

With a level and jack,

Have all three mounts on engine bar the passenger side one,
(obviously car must be level) throw a level on the top of the rocker cover from west to south and use a hydrolic jack to align engine into position (level)and the tack L to chassis support bush outter.

Remove and weld up off car finish it off and paint black refit to engine and chassis.

alot easier than it seems but if you have good set of hands on the job and the right tools can be done no problem.
Most just buy the evo mount & bracket and fit to the VR4 block just like factory.

Ahh memories!! :D Goodluck with it mate, take your time with it and you'll be fine!

You may have to press out old bush when welding on the L bracket sometimes burns (weakens) the rubber mount.
Go a Ralliart one as a good upgrade

do you really think pressing the mount out is necessary, will an arc welder really melt the rubber????

Its not my methodology to leave it in there when welding it (IMHO)

But you can do what ever you want to ;) its your car and your own methods
thats just my opinion, I have see people leave them in there and not long down the track it starts to perish and the owner wonders why, well now you know in advance...what you do with this information is up to you.
;)

:smt017 what to do, well i dont really waana mess this up so ill press it out thanks for the heads up ill let yous know in a few weeks how it goes
