Hey guys,

Well since the car had to be towed tonight to the mechanics i though i might aswell ask them to do a major service on it (180000k's). Firstly why she's there, just couldn't get it into gear. No matter how hard i tried wouldn't go, when the car is off it's fine but when the engine is running it's not. Funny thing was, by the time the tow truck got there it would go into gears but i thought might aswell get it checked out. My guess.....some sort of master of slave clutch cylinder? Or some crappy old fluid? Gearbox and clutch were done about a year or so ago.

Anyway to my real question, what sort of things would i be looking at getting done for a major service and what sort of price range am i looking at? I knows it's timing belt, and all other belts, brake fluid, clutch fluid...what else?

Cheers

a very disgruntled and carless Jason

so uhh.. did you check the fluid levels, or for any leaks, try pumping the clutch?

and you're up for around a grand, timing belt $400-800 depending on the mechanic...

yeop

sounds like youre master/slave cylinder has shat itelf.

not that exy to fix on its own..... but with a major service aswell... u might be up for some lump sum :?

Fluid levels were fine, but i didn't really check for leaks and stuff like that considering that i was on the side of the highway. :D I just did the whole ring RACQ thing and got the hell off the highway before it got waaay too busy.

Yeah i'm expecting the major service to be a little pricey, but it needs to be done at around 190000k's....so i thought might aswell get it done now while it's at the mechanics. Don't know they guy too well, but my dad has had good dealings with him. He is dropping a 4g93t into his gf's lancer so he might know what he's doing :D

Things to do in Major service:

Cambelt (at 180000kms its definitly due for its second)
Waterpump (Cant recomend this one enough!)
Alternator belt
Powersteering/Aircon belt

Not to mention the usual oil/filter, and a flush of the coolant system.

As for the clutch, how does the pedal feel? Like youve still got hydraulic pressure as normal? Or is it weak as hell?

Clutch pedal felt normal, like i still had pressure. I'm sure i'll find out tomorrrow anyway, it's out of my hands and at the mechanics. I'll keep you guys informed though.

Timing belt
Water pump
Alternator Belt
Power steering/aircon belt

and might aswell get the fuel filter done while it's there too.

You should replace EVERY filter in the car at a major service, also check your filter-rail fuel line (this can clog)

Also check your CV boots (ALL FOUR CORNERS)

Check & Replace Transfer case for metal shards in oil (dead bearing)

Check shifter bushings

Check all linkages between shifter/gearbox

Check & replace Gearbox for metal shards in oil (dead bearing)

Go get a proper wheel alignment

Check & Inspect shocks/struts all four corners

Check & replace as required dust boots and bumpstops on shock/struts

Check entire underside of car for signs of rust in panels or rails

Check tailshaft carrier bearing

Spin your rear wheels and make sure your Rear LSD hasn't given up the ghost (if you've got one!)

Check & Inspect brake rotors - replace as neccessary

Check & Inspect brake pads - replace etc

Check & Inspect brake lines & fittings, check for excessive flex and signs of wear

Test calipers and adjust handbrake (It will need adjustment)

^^ That's just some of my checklist :D

Also re: gears, open up your master/slave and look for a bit of floating rubber. Sounds like you blew the seal so it's not making any pressure.

heres a shortlist of what i did...

timing belt
balance belt
2 cam shaft seals
crank shaft seal
balance shaft seal
oil pump seal
a/c belt
p/s belt
alternator belt

parts + labour = $715 (inc. 4 sparkies)
but there are other things you should do as others have mentioned.

service

Jason, hope you are not using the guy that screwed up BennyGee's timing belt job.

Am i the only one in brisbane with a car that goes at the moment?

Thanks for the gigantically long checklist....i will make sure things like that are checked out by him then double checked myself (what i can).

Naa rob i've taken her to someone else, glad i don't need the car till tuesday so i can get some work done on her while it's off the road. And my car goes, just not very far :D

my car is sorta on the road.
its driveable but unsafe. replaced engine mounts, vibration slightly different now. my mechanic and i are thinking suspension, possibly a damaged strut.

scouring the earth for cheapish coilovers at the moment.

strut

Crossam, I have some stock front struts (complete) which you are welcome to try, they were working fine (no leaks) when I pulled them off.
I you want them, let me know and I will bring them to Redbank on Sunday morning.
