E III Recaro Pilot
Hey people. This could one day save a few people alot of headaches,so I
Thought id pass on some information that ive discovered that could be very usefull for anyone selecting wheels/tyre,especially if your buying unseen packages.
Contrary to the page that has been used by many of us before
http://boostin.home.mchsi.com/knowncombos.htm
I have found that a maximum of around 160mm or approx 6.3 inches of backspace is all you can fit on these cars...Thats for a 17 inch rim.
When i say this,I am talking about the rear, the front is a little more genorous, probably up around 6.7,but i havnt checked it at full steering lock.
A smaller rim would need a little more clearance, and a larger rim would be ok,itd actually have more clearance, but where only talking + or - 5 mm here at a guess.Thats because of the shape of the rear trailing arms,it curves, more clearance at the front, and less at the back.
Hope this helps,as i said,the wheel page can be a little misguiding,it says a backspace between 6.0 to 6.7.
I could never see a 6.7 fitting on the rear,not for a 17 inch rim anyway,maybe an 18.
It also holds fairly true that
- A 7" wide rim should be between 35 and 40mm of offset
- A 8" wide rim should be between 30 and 35mm of offset
- A 9" wide rim should be between 25 and 30mm of offset
But again, that depends on your rim size,eg 15,16,17 or 18 inch wheel.

The second site there is a fitment guide for 2g vehicles, and by experience of my own, theyre a little different, they can run a liitle more backspace, but as i said, the sites are only a guide, but still very usefull.
But remember..Backspace is the most crucial factor. And it can vary as you change things like camber on your wheel alignment, but only minimally.
I also found that the very top table on this page is wrong,
http://boostin.home.mchsi.com/backspacing.htm
It says a vr4 has a standard backspace of 4.77 inch, when the table below says around 5.25.
I beleive 5.25 inches to be correct,as it came up true with all my other calculations.
Hope this helps a few.
