Max tyre size and rubbing

I'm running a 205/40/17 at the moment and getting some rubbing on the rear arm.

I hear people running a 215/40/17 and with some minor guard rolling and not running the inner plastic front guards.

Is it possible to run a 205/45/17? Or despite the increasing lack of tyre options, is it best to stick with 205/40/17s?

I was running 215/35/18 on 18x7 +45. slight occasional rub on inner apron on front. I reckon +38 would be better and not stick out the front gsr guards.
Rears are different being a ute. I think they were 235/40/18, rubbed inside and out even with liners removed and lip rolled.
 
Im running 215 45 17 ku36s cant go to full lock but aside from that have no rubbing, if i had put a different offset to the rear on the front I would have been fine
 
Im running 215 40 17 Advan AD08's no issue on the Buddy clubs. And car sits low. I found the same ont eh KU36's. great grip for price, but suspension needs to be set right.
 
I run 225/45/17 on my 95 gsr but I had the guards pumoed just a little bit when the car was painted
 
205/40/17 +40 over here no scrub on the front just a touch on the bumper tab in the rear rolled guards in the rear
 
I have 16 x 6 OZ, ET 40 with Bridgestone 205 x 50 tires. I did have to roll the rear guards and raise the rear a little but after that they were fine.
I also have Enkei Tarmacs 17 x 7 ET 45 with 215 x 45 AO48 and they fit fine too.
Also some tire brands are not exactly the size they say on the sidewalls so that can add to the confusion eg Bridgestone 205 x 50 actually measure 208 x 50. Some are thinner than what they say also.
 
Cheers guys. It seems like people are running 215s (or greater) and also higher profile. I guess I'll just have to go to the tyre shop and get them to try some on the rim. Will also re-measure the aftermarket rims to check the offset.

Anyone had good experiences with tyres? Looking at Federal 595s or Bridgestone RE-002s at the moment.
 
what kind of car you putting them on general rule of thumb is for every inch the rim is over stock go down a profile size. your aim is to keep the rolling diameter the same. you only have to worry about how wide the Tyre is to ensure you clear suspension components
 
Be careful with the profile size you choose because your speedo will read incorrectly.
With tires, I stick to the better brands Bridgestone (RE-01R's are my favorite), Yokahama (Neova's), Dunlop (Sport Maxx)
Having said that though, Hankook and Nexan have some good cheaper options.
It just depends where you live. If you live where it rains a lot then you need a tire that does well when conditions are wet etc
I look at tread-wear ratings to see how much grip the tire will give me and weigh that up against cost
 
Last time I bought tyres was 2005. The E1 does very little kms.

I've checked out all the sizes and impact on speedo, so not worried about that. More so how people are going with 215 (and larger) size tyres when I'm supposedly having issues with a 205 rubbing on the suspension arm. Could just have been from a track day years ago and a paranoid mechanic.
 
the 215 measurement you keep quoting is how wide the Tyre is in mm and now your issue for scrubbing is either to little or to much offset on the rim it won't matter if you go to a 205 or a 225 Tyre if the amount of offset in your rim doesn't seat the Tyre an appropriate distance from the suspension components.

take a look at the back of you rim and quote to us your offset is should be stamped on it.

alternatively is you run to much side wall you could scrub on components but that's less likely fitting rims and tyre is an art and more often than not a compromise between width and stance
 
Ku36s are cheap from option 1 garage up here and an awesome tyre, last time i was at lakeside there was a guy on the 595rsr's in a newer VR4 an he found they got real slippery towards the end of the day an looped it twice.

Any bigger diameter on front will rub on bottom of spring perch unless you have coilovers.and it's pretty close to strut shocky tube as well. You may get 225/35/18 on just. (with same rim size I have)
