After so many, many years owning my RVR. I am finally at the point where I am feeling the need for more power.
I bought my RVR with 23,000km on it. It now has 168k. What do I need to do now?

The vehicle currently has the following modifications:

2 3/4" exhaust from the turbo, high flow cat and 1 muffler.
Pod Filter (with soon cold air induction).
Turbosmart twin stage boost controller.

I feel the ECU could be the next step, but I have no idea where to get something done to it, without having to rewire the car with a new computer.

Any ideas would be highly appreciated.

Cheers
Brendan

ECMLITE is the best bang for bucks in terms of ecu.....it makes the std ecu fairly tunable without the need for swapping chips. They are a sponsor on this forum,

Chip = cheaper, faster option
Ecm = more expensive, long term option if you plan to get serious.

You could easily go more fuel, more boost, improve intercooling and piping.

A 3" exhaust will improve things slightly also with added noise

What sort of prices are we looking at for these two options??

And where do you boys get your AWD tuning done in SE QLD? APC in Springwood?

Baz has it on the money.

A chip is the cheapest option, however I wouldn't say that it's not a long term option. VR401 has done some great mods to his car and is pushing decent figures from his car without too much hassle. Keeping in mind that the RVR Ecu is a fairly decent base to start on, you can do alot as it is, however when you want to start pushing bigger numbers something like a Motec / Haltech etc is an option. I'm not saying the chip is better, but you can do alot of what you need with the stock ECU. If you find yourself an E8MR Ecu you could have it re-wired and replace some sensors in your car and have an even more customisable stock ECU option.

My suggestion on upgrades would be the following if you want more power (assuming you haven't already done some of these)

3" Turbo back with high flow Cat
TD05-Big16G with 20G wheel (Can be bought new for around $1000)
Better intake setup (I'll talk to you about that as I might have something here that might suit you)
Alu mandrell/welded Intercooler pipe with a decent coat of HPC to stop heat getting in
Decent tune-length manifold

Most of this can be done for under $3000 if you don't mind installing it all yourself.
Then spend a little money doing the ECU and getting a good AW Dyno tune or spend the money and buy a wideband O2 sensor and road tune with help from VR401 and save your pennies!

If you want to go a step up again, upgrade to some Kelford 272 cam's and you're going to be pushing much better figures and pulling much harder.

As for tuning, there are many places around, you just need to figure who you want tuning your car, everyone has different methods and a different style of tune.

For $3000 you will have a car that will have more power than what it would buying an expensive aftermarket ECU. ;)

560cc injectors
Walbro pump
3" Exhaust from the turbo
Intercooler piping
264/272 cams
ECM link
Clutch (is it a manual?)
Custom intake pipe
EVO 8 MR blow off valve

There is no need! Thats exactly what ECMLink does.
Plus no need to redo chips if you decide on changing your mod setup later on.

Good info guys...

Dont the RVR's come out with 'yellow' 520cc injectors standard? That's what mine are anyway, and i bought it stock standard.

Manual comes with 510cc yellow ones but most of people upgrade to 560cc latest evo. Bare in mind that if your plan is to go well over 200kw you may as well go for bigger then 560. There is nothing wrong to run big injectors even if you don't have lot of power as long as they're tuned properly. I used to run 750cc RC in my vr4 pushing around 200kw.

ECMlite is a great way forward if you are looking to do the ecu upgrade. I have it in my RVR and Tom from ECMlink is great to deal with.

As for the rest of the power upgrades I have virtually what Clutz has suggested done to my rvr with the exception of the cams being hks 264's in place of the 264/272 combo he suggested. Also look to hard wiring your fuel pump to remove the low voltage that the factory ecu feeds to the pump. This will ensure that when you do upgrade your fuel pump you will see its true flow rate rather than a reduced volume due to reduced voltage (look at the voltage vs flow rate curve and the difference is dramatic)

just my 2c

Thanks for all the great suggestions guys!

I forgot to add that I already have a stronger ceramic clutch (after smashing the stock one to pieces) and a Tomei EVO III BOV (Simply replaces the stock model and holds higher boost better).

I think I might look at a chip reprogram first. Then save the $$$'s and go from there! :)
