I think we had one of the worst weeks on the road in a while (5 or 7 people killed???) and even Ken Lay admitted that none of them were caused by hooning.

So does anyone actually know what these new cameras are for yet? Im tempted to get out and ask next time, but Im concerned I'll get an instant canary

Haha, fascist government at work!

Interestingly the accident report forms the police complete don't have many options, so speeding is the most common choice. Hence the government thinks most accidents are caused by speeding. Revenue is of course important. I'd like to see the Liberals or some other party stand up before the next election and say the punishment of motorists has gone too far.

i'd say speeding isnt the main problem.

what i'd be more concerned:
- drunk driving
- lack of driving skills (nanny, etc)
- mothers busy with baby
- lack of concentration -> phone, etc.

because speeding is not dangerous if he knows what he's doing.
i mean in a normal case, not in an extreme case like 160 in 40zone.

let's say, 130kmh in 100 zone, or 70kmh in 50 or 60zone, or 100kmh in 80zone WITH FULL CONCENTRATION, that wont be dangerous, right?

It depends how fast the other traffic is moving. If you're the only person or you have plenty of space and nobody in other lanes, I can't see how obeying an arbitrary speed limit is any safer than your example.

If there's other cars around though, or in residential streets, anything can happen. I've been seeing drivers do the most random shit recently ... massive veering double lane changes, cutting in then braking hard, made up women driving 4WDs on their phones ... that shit is much more dangerous.

Those speed cams must work really well because they have had such a good effect on the road toll this year! Especially this week, I am glad they got all those noisy cars off the road too because imagine how many more would have died this week!!!!
<end sarcasm>

Well.. Based on the ADR's and the speed offences.. I always understood it to be 10%. Though, previous campaigns stated a "Zero Tollerance" to speeding. Big contradiction to laws.

And the ADR's can not be amended to cater for 100% accuracy as there are determining factors (Tyre wear, tyre pressure).

Having said that. Are speed cameras 100% accurate at all speeds? Do they require calibration regularly? Do weather conditions affect the accuracy? Does the color fo your car, shape and/or cleanliness (reflectiveness) have an affect on reading?

Speed cameras don't save lives, speed cameras as a technology can not be 100% accurate and they are only there to raise revenue. Does that money go to making our roads better? Or just putting up more revenue cameras?

The system has its flaws and they are serious flaws. I would like to see scientific tests completed for all speed camera types in all weather conditions against a variety of vehicles and colors.

Went off the deep end a bit, but i think i make some valid points?

aye.. getting someone for 5 over is bs... that isnt dangerous.. its EXCESSIVE speed that is the issue... people weaving thru traffic 20 kph faster than the rest etc, allowing a 10% grace should be the norm before you get fined but its not going to happen, my mum has a new commodore and its 10 kph out at 100, how can you expect people to be accurate to 2 or 3 kph at 100 when they cant even manufacture it that accurately
