Hey guys was going out for lunch today and went to put it into reverse and .........nothing! :( Cant put it into reverse at all :(

Pumped the clutch pedal, looked at the linkage. Nothing looked out of place but it just wouldnt budge, it is like there is no gate. Bushes on the selector looked fine albut a bit of movement, all gears work, just no reverse.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated :)

By the way will a GVR4 gear box line up without any trouble? Gear ratios?

Thanks

Dane

Hey Dane,

Is there any issues with 5th ?? Had a car in last week with a worn/stripped 5th/reverse syncro hub, 5th & reverse share the same hub and if worn can stop reverse shifting !! otherwise try and select manually at the box which will take two people, one going for reverse & you at the box trying to perswade the sucker !!

They didnt have issues with the reverse light coming on while in reverse did they? keeping in mind the globes were good?

When the selector was half way in the gate the light would come on...then when reverse was fully selected the light would go off.

Yes 5th is a little hard to get into :( In fact it almost didnt go in on the way home :(

Unscrew the reverse switch from the top of your gearbox and then try to put it in reverse. If it works, you know what the problem is  I accidently stumbled on the same thing on a friends car that I worked on a year ago. I couldnt figure out why we couldnt shift into reverse until I took the reverse switch out (must have had a problem with the ball bearing tip or screwed in way too far blocking shifts) and walah!! we could shift into reverse again. I grabbed a replacement switch from another gearbox in the garage and screwed it back in making sure that reverse could still engage and that the reverse lights were triggering on and everything was OK. It might not be your problem but give it a try and let us know :)

Thanks evo-00x, but i tried that :(

I think it might be more what Darren said.

What about the detents on the side of the gearbox? Would they be seized up?

What about if i swapped the 5th synchro hub/or gear set from the VR4 box? Would that work?

ha ha ha , another lemon in the making... nah sorry man, just buy an EVO.

No way Evos are for noobs. :x

For the people who don't know...what are detents??

(noobs = people with money  )

Bellow are some pics of the vr4 box i have with the top cover off.
Bob the first pic is the ball, spring/detent, it stops the gear from popping out. Last pic can that 5th/reverse gearset swap over to the gsr without puling it appart too much/anymore? Circlip looking clips off and swap?

Thanks :)

ok, now can you select reverse or does it try to go with the cover off ?? also see the roll pin in the selector fork, knock that out then try to select reverse, if it goes then problem with the syncro hub if not is further internal !!

Update.

WTF is going on? :? :(

I cracked the top case (well the side when you look at it on the car) and this is what i saw:

From there with the case off it would go into reverse, but the selector cables have stretched making it a little hard for a while then it settles down.

The brass ring has a bit of wear around the inside of it. I swapped it with the one from daves gearbox as we just got him a new one on this weekend.

What about that wave type spring? Should it have more spring to it?

But as soon as i put the case back on no reverse AND 5th is a little hard to get into.

Any help from you gearbox gurus would be great.

Mr Gears, Meek, AFAS, CVAP please help.

^^^^^That one is the VR4 box thats in my garage Darren, i was using it as a reference point. Mine is a gsr box.

OK

I have checked the following:

Shift cables for the throw length, If i changed the cable length it would affect all gears the same yeah? Meaning that something is still stopping reverse gear from going all the way in? One affects the other inversly?

pulled all the detents/balls/springs(3 on the side) out, pulled out the reverse sensor to check if anything is fouling,
pulled off the case,
now there is no reverse still, it moves a little into it, but only about 1 cm or so. Even with the baulking ring (brass) in place and me holding it, it still wont go into reverse :(

Short of it most likely now being internal, has anyone got any ideas.

I dont really have a lot of cash lying around now as my wife is out of work and i also need a new clutch  so a rebuild is going to cost.

Unless i get a 4g93 gearbox manual and pull Daves cracked gearbox appart and learn from that :?:

Thanks

*UPDATE*

Gearbox is now fully functional! :D Well sitting on the ground anyway :p

So what i did was after a lot of mucking around pulling 2 gearboxes appart, i found out that not only was i not getting anywhere, was to say Fuck it ill put the whole vr4 5th/Reverse gearset in (including the matching needle bearings)and the 5th intermediate gear as well so they matched! This was at midnight on a school night and I had the shits

Put it together with a new roll pin and plenty of lube and Tadaa... it now has not only 5th but reverse as well :D

I also used the VR4 top case to match the VR4's "Stop plate" enabled 5th/R gearset

Thanks to all the people who helped me to get my gearbox going. Especially the gearbox GURUs that helped through their PM's and posts.

A manual helps too

All i need now is my clutch to arrive :D
