thought i'de post this here coz its not exactly just VR4 specific.

ok so i took my mate for a spin earlier on coz he hadnt been in my car before.

As i planted it down the street it came on boost but not as quickly as it usually does but still you could tell it was there. didnt think much of it at the time.

went to the servo round the corner, grabbed what i had to, jumped back in the car

heading back i punched it again and worked my way through the gears. this time it went absolutley NOWHERE, i was at the top of fourth gear doing about 95kmh and came to the conclusion something was defintley not right

If i listened closely i could hear the spooling as per usual but not as loudly and when i came off throttle i didnt get my usual flutter (not running a BOV) but more of a "pshhhahhhhhhhhhh" sound
but a very smooth sound if that makes sense, like it was being dumped out a big gaping hole somwhere

so naturally i pulled over whipped out the torch and checked all my silicone joiners to make sure it hadnt popped off somewhere in the cooler piping and they were all fine

checked vaccuum linesand hose clamps and couldnt find a fault in it. I threw a boost guage on quickly and got a reading of 0.5 bar, maybe 0.6 bar if you really milked the gear and it took forever to get there

My initial usumption is that the wastegate has somehow stuck itself open causing it to bleed off and not build boost pressure...does this sound like the culprit? if so how can i double check and make sure it is the actuator?

could it be computer related? (running an Autronic SM4)

can driving it like this do any harm to the motor or anything else? i dont wanna destroy things

any insight would be much appreciated guys :)

Pressure test the intake. As well as checking for leaks, as the pressure builds to around 5psi you should see the wastegate actuator start to move so you can check that it is working.

Top of 4th gear is ALOT faster than 95 km/h. If this is true, check your rear drive shafts are still intact or for a slipping clutch.

Maybe the actuator arm has come off the wastegate flapper ...

same thing happened to me, and just after a quick few spurts on the gas :)

+1 sopunds like you have snapped a rear shaft if you are doing 95kph at the top of 4th gear

u mean that not having any + pressure in a system which was tuned to run 22psi would not cause the car to do 95km/h in fourth?

if your not under as much load your not gonna build as much boost... hence why the guys thing clutch/driveshaft...

in saying that if it was clutch on its l;ast legs surely you should have been able to smell it

i had a look and they all look intact to me

if there is a breakage will it be obvious or is it easy to miss if you dont know what your looking for?

if it were clutch then it would have some very obvious slipping wouldnt it?

The rear drive shafts can break internally in the diff, Jack it up on stands or get it up on a hoist and drive it in the air.

Troy has had this happen on his without realising...

Makes sense to be a broken shaft.
But the other suggestions seem possible too.

When you say "top of 4th", if you were doing 6000-7000 rpm in 4th gear, you should be doing around 170-180 kph. Unless of course, something is slipping. Even if you had no positive boost pressure, it would still climb up to around at least 160 kph eventually.
