with hypos being an evo it doesn't require the same type of kit as he already has the cooler from the factory---maybe twin coolers?

Lol ok...Just answering him:p

I have been told today for track use I need a bigger oil cooler.

Not sure about the oil thermo?

Not sure why you would need a bigger than stock oil cooler unless it was pure choice not necessity I was going to go down the oil cooler upgrade path untill I made up my own oil cooler shroud highest Ive ecver recorded at wakefield was 103 on the stock oil cooler nothing else, this was after 7hot laps.

It took me around 3 trial and error templates to get the shape and fold correct to sit perfectly surrounding the air dam
to get the best design.
The template for the final one looks like a ugly capital "C" but when bent correctly makes this shape. This is specifically
designed for a EvoIII bar as 1 & 2 are smaller and not as deep.

Here's what it looks like close up

Without a Shroud around a oil cooler or intercooler for that matter they just don't work as efficiently, small mods can make a hugh difference without $$ outlay with stock OEM components

Nice work Wiki!

LOL Smartarse :p ............Edited posts to reflect my non-idiotness (new word I swear:p)

I have both sheets in my garage, to tell you the truth i really didnt look at the material that closely.....I was in awe of you genius:lol:. Just thinking Black for stealth anyway:)

I cant fit one behind my bar.....the cooler is just not quite touching it.

Its right in the air flow anyway.

Mine needs replacing as I am rebuilding the engine.

I don't necessarily need a bigger unit, I was going to upgrade if the price difference was minimal compared to replacing the standard unit.

I appreciate everyones help and opinions with this. I only want to do it once.

What were your oil temps like on the track Hypo? I never saw over 120 degrees C in my vr4 and that was with the stock jap spec oil cooler set up which definately could have benefitted from some "Liberoz" ducting.

This is one of my problems I have no idea.

I might just grab a PWR Cooler and fit a temperature gauge. If it spikes I will replace the oil cooler with a bigger unit.

I reckon you are worrying about nothing. Consider the purpose your car was built for - rallying - a mix of fast and slow speed with the car often sideways and therefore less than ideal airflow through the front of the car. Now consider how easy a time you are giving it on the track as it is getting by fast flowing and usually ideal airflow through the coolers.
Monitor temps first, worry later if it ever becomes a problem.

How does one clean an oil cooler then.

Everyone has told me to get a new one due to the engine rebuild.

Just run petrol through it. Or is it full of caramel due to a blown head gasket?

No caramel.

I suppose when spending the dollars on the rebuild I want to be sure of what is going into the engine.

how many people rebuild the engine to 2xx kilowasps and worry about the stock gearbox later?

What Rob323 is saying to you is if its not broken dont fix it! Unless you need it done, the stock cooler will be more than sufficient for the job.

I can't understand why people would tell you to replace the oil cooler just cause you are rebuilding the engine. Oil filter - yes, but not the oil cooler. Oil pump - maybe, but not the oil cooler. It's like saying that you have to replace the intercooler as well.
Unless there is gunk or engine parts wedged in there? Was the engine just tired or did it suffer from something terminally?

Surely a good reverse flush with concentrated degreaser and then a solvent (petrol, brake clean etc) would clean it up nicely.

just to bump up this thread, am now looking to get an oil cooler for my car before track which is june 14th.

current temp is about the 90 mark and that is just normal street driving..

can you guys post up any pics you have of your aftermarket oil coolers?

Cheers Peter

maybe just get some good air guides/ducting onto the stock one
should do the job pete.

I might have to come up to winton with you in the s13 if mines not done(it maybe though-yay)

so 90 degrees is normal? thats just normal day to daydriving, on track last time mine was sitting on the 110 degree mark and sometimes a little bit up... thought that was quite concerning.

george, im praying to god yours is ready . we can show up some of the later models.

im hoping i can get oil cooler/or shroud, front and rear sway bars and hopefully have some money to get my cage put in and ill be happy.

what do you need to do for yours?

just waiting on the engine mate - brembo parts are all done and fronts now need to be bolted up - just waiting for some bump steer spacers for the front lower arms
