Hey guys, i have seen threads about pressure, but i am interested in the temp and the oil's pressures relation to it..

I have oil temp, pressure and water temp gauges.

I was stuck on hoddle st tonight, seemed like forever. I glanced down at the gauges, and i have 135 degrees on the oil temp. (no unusual smells from the car) water temp holding solid at 85 degrees give or take a couple, and idle pressure near 5~7psi.

Normally when i am moving the oil is around 10-15 degrees higher then the water temp, (i have an oil cooler, not sure if this makes a difference)

When i idle in the normal conditions the oil pressure is about 16~18 psi,

What is an unsafe oil temperature, and is the pressure really that low when the temp is so high?

Once on the freeway the oil temp came down and it all goes back to normal..

.

you wouldnt want it to be too much higher than that to stay safe,i have seen higher on other cars but im not 100% on the max for a 4g63,
but i would like to know.

what oil temp does it normally run?

what oil do you use?

standard oil cooler?

Just changed oil to Penrite 15-60 (i think it's GPR something)

Oil temp normally sits about 85-95, Standard Cordia oil cooler,

it drops temp as soon as you have flow.

The radiator and cooling system is awesome, never had a problem and even when the thermo's are on. (the temp at the thermostat) is MAX 90-93ish,
Just noticed that as the oil temp goes up (in traffic) the pressure goes down, just wondering when i need to start being real concerned..

Car makes all the right noises, doesn't hesitate, no driveability issues.. just curious..

Nick ;)

It will also depend on where you are taking the oil temp from.

My readings are from the the head, if you are taking them from the sump, I would assume they would be a bit higher.

For my J spec vr4 with standard air cooled oil cooler, temps taken from the head (next to the oil feed for the turbo), std cruising temps are around 90 degrees C, and lapping around Queensland Raceway sends them up to 120 degrees C. They have never been any higher than that.

I have been advised by some circuit guys that about 140 degrees C is the safe limit for minerals oils and a bit higher for synthetics and if you send your oil over that, change it before the next race.

15w-60????

holy crap. What are you driving? a diesel?

The thicker the oil (like yorus) the worse it'll perform at higher temps, the pressure drop could be related to the oil breaking down somewhat at serious temps and being harder to push around.

penrite 15w-60 is not a thick oil prior to contrary belief the first number is the weight when cold, the 2nd number is the protection level, it is a common misconception that the 2nd number is the weight when hot. the HPR15 (15w-60) is what is reccomended for early turbo charged vehicles.

not always, with tests i have seen in rotary engines the best oils for high temps were bp corse plus (25-60) and hpr50 (25-70).

These were done by an independant person but as i said in rotaries which have high oil temps
