Overheating!

Hi all again.
Basically if i get stuck in traffic, in the maccas drive thru the car begines to start overheating, once back on the road the temp returns to normal. ive done a radiator flush new thermostat etc, but its the standard gti radiator and thermo fan, would say an aluminium radiator fix my issues? or what do u suggest?

davies craig 14 inch fan should fix it

sometimes thermostats, even new ones dont work you should test it with some boiling water, before fitting

my temp never goes over 80oc

it was doing it on the old thermostat as well, theres no room for a bigger thermo fan or i would have gone doubles by now :cry:

Have you done a pressure test ??? Are you leaking coolant ... ??? Do you have to keep filling up the radiator ??? Water coming out the exhaust ???

Have you thought about a blown head gasket, or a seal just not quite right.. ????

I had the same problem in my Cressida (known for BHG) ... It started getting hot when waiting in traffic and stuff... So for a while I was able to get around with the fan on constant .... Then it started to chew through water a little while after that ...

Did everything you did ... Radiator flush, new thermo, checked the fans and fuses ... Even pressure tested it, and it was not showing the full signs of BHG ... But kept holding on for a couple of months...

nope lol, not having to fill the fluid up once since the flush (3 months ago) colour of the coolant hasnt even change, the gnine is soo chammed in there i generally think the radiator cant keep it cool on stand still

I had this problem with my missuses shitty old ford laser, older car I kno but yours could still have the same issue, I had fitted a "good radiator" from this wrecker that was infact a dodgy prick but anyway, it all seemed fine but the radiator was blocked, went to the pick a part and got a bigger better ( non blocked ) Aluminium radiator from a TX3 that some one had spent some money on! have not had a problem since. I even fitted a thermostat as it was missing from the start, this was what I thought the initial problem was.

The Gti radiator is still a good size radiator and it shouldnt be overheating like that.

Start the car in neutral and pop the bonnet open and let the car heat up as normal. Keep feeling the lower radiator hose temperature with your hands. Go and check the temp in the car and go back to the lower radiator hose to feel the temp. Do this several times and it should be a bit over halfway on the temp guage when the thermostat opens and lets hot water run through the lower radiator hose.

At your current stage if the thermostat opens and the bottom radiator hose gets hot from water running through it then I would be looking at removing your radiator and getting it tested. Also, make sure you didnt wire up the thermo fans in reverse mode as it wouldnt be cooling the radiator if you did.

If the temp gauge keeps climbing and the lower hose does not get hot, then you have a blockage in your thermostat, or something people often overlook, the heater core inside the fan box under your dash.

If you changed the thermostat then I'd be suspecting the heater core and try bypassing it (i.e. the 2 hoses going into your firewall). If you can join the 2 hoses with a pipe then cool, if not just use a single hose to join both water pipes where these hoses feed from. Then try the same exercise with feeling the bottom radiator hose. If it fixes the problem and lets the thermostat open and the lower hose to heat up then you know you have to get another heater core and you have to take your dash out to do it.

Sounds like thermo fan problem. Make sure they are turning on and that they have power to them. If they do I would be looking at your Coolant temp sensor in the bottom tank of your radiator, as this tells the ECU when to turn the fan on.

not sure if this is any help, but it used to happen to my mates gsr too.
tried everything, turned out to be the thermostat, you have to make sure the loose rivet looking thing is at the highest point so it bleeds properly.

it could be a couple of things could be water temp sensor a blocked radiator, stuck close thermostat, also have a look at every water fitting in the engine bay look for corrosion and residue,

even if you have put a radiator flush as in a additive it never truely works even though you might think it does it doesnt true fact every1 just presumes it works because it says radiator flush, the proper way is too reverse flush the cooling system

also radiator caps can also cause this problem and it is a common cause of over heating,
