have a quick question for any pc techies :D
I have a laptop with a next g wireless broadband pcmcia card which I use at work.

Just wondering if there is any way that I can share the internet connection from the laptop with my playstation3 so I can play online while i am work!!
My laptop has and ps3 both have wireless capabilities, can i set up a network with my laptop or would I need a router or network switch and have to run it via ethernet?

cheers in advance
scott.

I don't think that you can set it up wirelessly, from memory the PS3 can't connect to an ad hoc (one to one) wireless network, so using a network cable is the only way.. make sure you get a crossover network cable.

To share the connection, you'll have to go into the LAN properties and allow it to share the internet connection... should work.

how did you go with the connection? would this work with an xbox? Do you guys think you could use a wireless access point on both ends aswell?

Yes this wired way will work with a xbox and xbox 360.

Its abit more expensive when you go wireless as you need to purchase the wireless adapter which is about $160.

Internet Connection Sharing i think you need to enable on your laptop.

I dont know if through wireless you can set up a peer-to-peer network. However, cross over cable will give you a connection between both computer. The easier more convenient way would be to get a small 4 port switch or switch/router and connect both via this. both set on same IP range, Subnet and set the PS3 to use your computer as the gate way.

I might not be making sense as i am partially brain dead at the moment. havent stopped working since friday morning..blah..

no luck for me..as the stupid telstra nextg connection does not allow you to run a shared connection

Yes everything will have to link to the Laptop first either direct cable or wireless.
Static IP is currently not available on the Next G network. So no remote access from different link without the card. and don't think it ever will be.
I'll take home a wireless card next week and try other things.
I work at Telstra so I can use it for free hehe, but already get free DSL2+ anyways.

Would be awesome if you could find a solution for me FRONTN :D I had no luck with a network cable as it did not want to allow a shared connection?

I thought that static ip's were unavailable even on adsl accounts, unless you paid extra for them?

I have a problem at home with my router which blocks me from downloading torrents, it can be configured but my ip changes every 24hrs so I would be constantly changing the settings, when I asked telstra about static ip they said it would be an extra $14 a month to have it fixed?

how bout try hooking up your laptop to a D-Link wireless router ... configure the network so that all other computers (PS3) are using internet through your laptop ... you got to have your laptop on and connected to NextG when you want to hook your ps3 on internet ... I'm pretty sure that will work as I did this before (but with Optus wireless) ... you just got to set the network configuration in your windows right.
