Hi guys, I will be building a 4g63t next week and am wondering if vr4 and vr4 Rs use the same piston rings.

When I went to make an order threw Hastings they said there where 2 sets to choose from. Both being 1.2x1.5x3mm but one having a shallow oil groove and the other not.

My guess would have been normal groove but I didn’t want to make a mistake.

Which should I order? The engine is from a 1990 JDM E38A VR4 Rs turbo.

In advanced thanks.

Hey mate, it doesn't look like you got an answer to your question and your thread has been inactive for a while so I think I'll hijack it. :p haha
Umm, could the difference be between the Evo and VR4 pistons? i.e 6/7 bolt engine? Apparently the pistons in the Evo are not the same.

So anyway, has anyone used el cheapo pistons/rings such as the following?

I don't want to get my hopes up at that price, but the tops of them do look alot like the standard pistons...

Actually I just wanted to replace the piston rings, and bearings as well if I had to, but at that price...

So yeah, just double checking, I'd be stupid to buy those wouldn't I? It's just that "Nippon" brand and "Made in Japan" kinda made me think twice, but then again, the box looks kinda fake....LOL I have no idea I know. :p
Would I be sweet to at least use the rings on my standard pistons? I mean how do you tell if piston rings are **** by looking at a picture??

Otherwise, where would I go to get some reasonably priced standard piston rings?

Cheers! And thanks in advance for any advice given. :)

get some ACL rings. Any spare parts store, just shop around.

If you consider the work involved, and the new head gasket required, it pays to do rebuilds properly, not el cheapo style.
