I have a 93 GSR, and recently I was giving it a bit of a caning up Mt Dandenong. Only had about 12 litres left in the fuel tank, and when I was under full boost in 3rd gear, the power cut out completely. Filling up the fuel tank seemed to sort this out, but I still get a feeling of power "cutting in and out" when under full boost. The problem seems to be worse in the lower gears, disappearing almost completely when cruising on the highway.

Would this be the fuel pumps playing up? Im up to 255000 clicks on the original pumps; anyone recommend where I can go and get the fuel pumps on my GSR tested in Eastern suburbs of Melbourne?

I'm no mechanic, just a backyard wannabe. I'd say from a logical standpoint that your guess is my guess. Cause if the tank is full, it creates a hydrostatic pressure that helps flow fuel through the lines, aiding a feul pump that my be on its way out. and when it's low the pump does all the work, and if it's going it would probally do what your saying. Also check your plugs, leads, and if these cars have a fuel filter (i'm new to these cars) replace it. Could also be a bad injector?

I had a similar problem in mine when I still had the 4G93T in it. It ended up being shell petrol that was the problem, as after a tank of optimax it clogged the injectors and they had to be cleaned before the car ran properly again. On BP ultimate or Mobil 8000 I used to have no problems, and then on the way up to NSW one time, I had to put optimax back in, and it rooted everything again. ....

you are probably getting fuel surge as well,my vr4 suffered from it, if I had anything under a 1/4 tank and went sideways it would just cut out, would sometimes do it with 3/4 tank of gas it all depends on how violently the car changes direction

GSR

Took the car out again today, I can feel power drop off between 3500-5000 rpm with the foot flat to the floor in 2nd. Again, at highway speed in 5th, if I nail the throttle this doesnt happen, only at low speeds/gears. From 5000to redline its normal again.

Any recommendations on a good EFI specialist in the Eastern Suburbs to get the car checked out?

PS There are no boost leaks and ive had it compression tested at 175 at each cylinder, so it definitely is a fuel/electronics issue.

its not good to run under a quater tank of fuel as it kills the pump quick, and gets all the dirt thats been sitting right on the bottom

but going up mt dandenong, yeah I would say boost/fuel cut as boost would creep up due to mitsubishi little wategates, when its a bit cold they spike

Mine did a simelar thing in Tasmania, I got a tank of shit fuel, and as soon as I got BP98 back in it it came good.... well mostly, it still has issues under acceleration but some times it is fine, I had an issue with the cam belt being loose and I thought it was the timing was wrong causing the issues, I have since fixed that and the problem is still there, my next step is the fuel filter then spark plug leads, if it is still doing it after this it could be a fuel pump or injectors related issue OR I have read that Mitsubishi ECU's are renound for the capaciters leaking onto the board causing issues so it could be this (I really should just get the ECU out and have a look)
So maybe you have blocked somthing (filter/injectors) by sucking up crap from the bottom of the tank, or there is any number of things it could be, I'm still trying to get mine running right, but I am lazy and poor so it is a slow process.....

Could be ignition related (plugs, leads, coilpack, ignitor) like what manny said, also a cam angle sensor, boost leak and ECU problems to name a few!

LOL sounds like it should be fun... Not a boost leak though, just had the inlet system pressure tested and no dramas. Might start with borrowing some leads off a mate and running some injector cleaner through the fuel tank.

If that doesnt work, does anyone have a suggestion for a good EFI specialist in the eastern suburbs (round box hill area).
