Power Steering Suggestions

hey guys

im considering removing P/S

now, im just wondering

1. what cars share the same steering rack (something non power steering)
and also
2. would i damage anything if i just ran the rack without the pump / lines (eg. looping the lines at the rack)

suggestions?
advice?

Do -NOT- drive a vr4 w/o PS.

Especially if 4ws is still in, you're turning TWO racks. Believe me you don't want to do this.

Don't believe me? let off the handbrake and roll down a slight incline, then try turning the car. Go get a gym membership first.

but thats not turning a car without power steering;
thats turning a car with power steering that isnt being used.

i wouldnt do it, but if you are all about dropping kg's (in your car, then yeah, fair enough.. forget it for a daily

Power steering is used to multiply the force you can apply to the steering.

Power steering allows the car designer to use different angles in the steering geometry (meaning wheel angles - more camber etc), which allow for better handling properties..

The effect you feel is that the steering is easier.

Enteran's example is correct. Try to turn the wheels with the car stationary.............

Extreme example: look at the front wheel angles of an old Holden (no power steering) and a Merc (power steering).

I suppose it would be possible to design a rack system to supply the required forces, but the number of turns of the steering wheel would be high!!!

i guess i cant compare it to my SUZUKI SWIFT GTi can I??

im considering doing it for racing basically..

reduce weight,
and save space (i dont have a water pump pulley... so its hard to get a belt from the water pump to the powersteering( might need a custom pulley)

anyway, once the car is rolling it should be good shouldn't it?

are there any manual racks i can get from other compatible cars?
did any galants come without p/s?
did any magna's?
did any sigma's etc etc??

anyway, what would happen if i were to chop the belt only before racing?
would it be worth it?

i believe manual racks vs power steering racks have different turning ratio's..

I've driven my cordia (1050kg) with the power steering belt removed for a couple of weeks and man...you should have seen my forearms after! They were chunky as!

how does a non power steering car handle vs a power steering assisted car on a race track? (corners etc etc)
