Punishment Racing Tubular Manifold

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

tuned length runners normally goes like this:

long runners: hi torque
short runners: hi RPM

have to find between for best overall performance for street

Just wait 'till you see what some of the local guys can do!

Doubt there that good

Check the 6Boost stuff. Kyle's offerings are at least that good.
nah, the one he makes for a vr4 doesnt fit without modifications to the engine mount

so i wouldn't bother paying that much for it

i never understood why they make these "tuned" manifolds??! i always thought the shorter an exhaust route, the less energy is consumed in releasing the exhaust gases...

must be something to do with the firing sequence of the engine.. 1-4-2-3 was it ??
have a look at your standard cast manifold
the air comes out flat, and hits the divider and then has to change direction about 90 degrees before it goes into the turbo

its about flow

best explanation so far tharaka! :D

love the diagram!.....its actually pretty effective with what ur trying to say

i dont think its about runner length / firing sequence

it has more to do with the collector...

the runners are long only because its the only way to get them to join to the collectors nice and smoothly without any drastic change in flow...

you want the exhaust gas to shoot down into the turbine..

all the good manifolds are using the big collector, you dont see many of the stock short log style manifolds being made...

SS manifolds are not all they're cracked up to be as well, the biggest issue is actually keeping the heat in the manifold, keeping the exhaust gas hot increases the volicity. also the radiant heat from the manifold increases the engine bay temperature tremendiously.

they NEED to be coated or wrapped to really make a gain, even then all the dyno plots i've seen of stock cast vs SS, the stock kills the SS in turbo response, low and mid range all the way up until about 5,500rpm and the the tuned length takes over and wins by about 10-20hp.

or course the more powerful the car, the bigger the difference is between stock and SS.

IMHO, if your making under 400FWHP, SS is not worth it...

anyway, pretty pictures :)

SS is lighter, HPC coating will take car of the heat and they look the shit as well. Screw steam pipe the weigh a tone :D

SS is lighter

lighter, weaker, prone to saging, cracking if not mounted correctly, but those problems are not really issues with the more expensive manifolds.

HPC coating will take care of the heat

yup, it will help

steam pipe is a much better material for exhaust manifolds than SS

Good point mr t4....

Bracing would have to be a priority otherwise it will flex and snapp like a twig.

But i like things to look pretty :D

:p You boys can stick to your SS manifolds that look nice when new but end up looking like sh!t after the first time you use them  . I'll stick to my ceramic coated steampipe manifold that will last longer and look good all the time

exactly :D

Or just get a GTPumps cast manifold with already large ports (that has a lot of meat for porting) and with the money you save spend it elsewhere? :smt109

which brings me back to this

i think the best option for cast is the fp cast manifold

i would have deffinalty gone cast if i had the chance, only problem is i couldnt find any that would work well with a external wastegate... :(

there was one that takes the feed off the number one runner only which wasnt ideal, the other option was blowing a hole above the collector and welding the gate on there, not ideal either.

as we know, exhaust gas doesnt like making 90deg bends...

so when it comes to an efficent setup with and external wastegate, you only real option is a custom manifold, i.e. SS or preferably steam pipe.

cast would deffinatly be the better option though if your not planing on using and external.
