Hi all, I'm wanting to know if you have to re-tighten head studs after a build?
I have done a search and havent been able to find anything.
I have asked a few people and I have had a 50/50 with responce. :?
They are ARP on a EVO 3 and what is the torque NM amount you use?
Cheers. :)

well it was explained to me that a multi-layer stainless head gasket works just like a big spring washer keeping constant pressure on the head studs. thats what i was told when the motor got built in my vl, after i ran it in and added the t66 i cracked the head so the head came off and the arp head studs were still at there torque setting.

Do the head studs have a torque setting, or are they an initial torque with 1 or 2 90 degree turns? And if this is the case how would you check/retighten them, would they need to be undone then retorqued or what? I would be interested to kno as I will want to use the ARP headstuds at some stage..

YES, EVERYTHING has a torque setting, just a matter of finding out what amount.

im 99% sure arp head studs have a inital torque setting then plus 90 degrees as richard said

would have to check though

The ARP torque settings are on the back of the box and the number escapes me at the moment for the headstuds, maybe 75-80 ft-lbs (I remember the main studs were 60 ft/lbs though but only if using the ARP moly-lubricant). So, you'll have to actually match up the stud size to the table on the back of the box and tension them to the right setting depending on whether you will be using mineral oil or ARP lube :) Plus dont forget to measure the length of the studs to ensure that there was no stretching but it'll probably be a fat chance of that happening

I put head studs in my g63 on the wk end, didnt dsay anything on the box about re tensioning.
I used a 3 layer metal Mitsu gasket.

You're in luck. I found these in my garage yesterday 8) - PS: I hope you dont mind the ARP lube stains

Ok im having trobble understanding this, i know that the nut for the head is torqued at 70 Nm but what Nm do you torque the stud up to

Read Point number "3" on either of the yellow or white scanned pages above - 'only hand tight'.
