HELP PLEASE

I have just put a TD05 14B with a 16G turbine housing into my GSR (4g93) and I'm not get any boost under 4000rpm and it struggles to make 6-10 psi at 4500 and has no go.

I have put a rebuild kit through it and set the waste gate actuator to move at about 12psi as per work shop manual. One question is, how firm should the actuator be pushing the flapper closed?

I do have a manual boost tap that I've wound up and down with little change

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks
Phi

***UPDATE 10pm Wed 3/8/11

Still no boost, l've even pulled the turbo out and rebuilt it using a 16G compressor out of desperation.

Made sure the waste gate is closed tight. Removed the blow off valve and still no boost

What now?

Anyone?

***UPDATE 6.30pm Fri 5/8/11

For anyone who may have this problem in the future here's what I found.

I made a phone call for help and was advised to remove intake and outlet pipes of the compressor and check that it is spinning and pumping out air, it wasn't, it was stopped dead at idle and was sluggish when revved with little output air.
If you are going to do this what I did was put the flexible pipe you remove from the turbo outlet into the other flexible pipe removed from the turbo inlet and tape it up to make it air tight, this completes the air path and allows engine to run no probs.

In my defence I made sure the turbo spun freely by hand before fitting it but when I compared it to the TD04 I removed it wasn't as free. If I blow (air) from my mouth on the turbine of the 4 it spins freely but the 5 doesn't move F**K.

I have refitted the 4 and the car is boosting away like there's no tomorrow. So after all that I still don't have a 5 on her.

Thanks Andrew.

you have bought the matching compressor wheel as well, havent you?

I am using the 14B compressor wheel, housing and CHRA, The turbine wheel is the same for both 14B and 16G but the housings have different port sizes but are completely interchangeable to my knowledge

The rebuild kit I purchased was for the 14B flat back wheel and not the raised 16G wheel as I am running the 14B compressor wheel.
See attached pics for clarification.

I hope this answers your question as I'm not quite sure what you meant.

Thanks

The actuator should be holding the gate closed hard. If its opening easily this could explain the lack of boost.

You want the actuator to be pre-tensioned holding the flap closed. So once the actuator is bolted on you want to have to pull the arm back a bit to fit the end on the arm on the flap. So it's nice and tight and tension on the flap.
If its not tight put a washer or two under the two bolts onto the turbo so the actuator is moved out to pre tension it.
If you over tension it however the flap wont be able to open enough as its range will be limited and you will creep boost up top.

As you do the bolts up on the actuator you can also control the angle a bit as the holes are slotted, this may even be enough to tension the rod.

People are mixing up their turbines and compressors (and housings) here. There's no such thing as a "14B" or "16G" turbine (exhaust) housing. There are 6cm and 7cm TD05H turbine housings. Both the TD05H-14B and TD05H-16G have the same turbine wheel (the shaft on the TD05H-16G is slightly longer though). 14B and 16G Compressor housings are not interchangeable.

Definitely sounds like an actuator issue, the 6cm and 7cm exhaust housings are completely interchangeable and the difference should be barely noticeable.

I believe I did say the turbine housing is interchangeable (exhaust end) and not the compressor. I referenced the turbine housings as 14b and 16G purely for ease of reference as the turbine wheel is exactly the same size and the 14B housing has a 54mm exhaust inlet ring and the 16G has a 60mm exhaust inlet ring and the exhaust outlet/dump area is larger and a different shape on the 16G. see pics for anyone else following this.

Thanks heaps
