FYI.

In areas governed by Brisbane City council at least, all red light cameras are now rumoured to have been retrofitted with speed cameras.

So, if you run a red light, and speed up to get through it, you will be fined for running a red light, fined for speeding and just to milk it for all it's worth, you may also be fined for dangerous driving as well.

I don't condone driving through red lights anyway so I'm not too concerned about it. But is sure is rubbing salt in the wound if you do it by accident.

yeah i heard this too but will the cameras get you if u run the yellow light??? or half way through the lights then it turns yellow

I believe a red light camera only activates when something crosses the solid white line after the light goes red. So if you are already in the intersection when it turns yellow, you won't get done.
But trying to find out the exact info is almost impossible, It's almost like they don't want the public to know.

im not sure bout the ones your got but im pretty sure i read on one of the rta sites that it doesn't take it immediately, its a few seconds after it turns red

We have them in WA now to. Got put in over the last few months. Ive seen them get heaps of peopl speeding through lights.

I've quickly adjusted to stopping at the amber instead of planting the foot.. It does help imo... I can honestly say I used to go for it...

the speed camera will always be active so if you speed through the intersection regardless of light color you will get done. (thus catching amber gamblers whos speed to make the light) once the red is illuminated the red light camera is triped any traffic that now runs this light can be hit with all three

The yellow light is NOT AN EXTENSION OF THE GREEN but is THE START OF THE RED and you must stop if you can do safely
Most think that if they can get onto the xing before the red they are not breaking the law . They clearly need to do a refresher course on the road rules

This is true....The speed camera works all the time. There is even talk of also making the camera ANPR(Auto Number Plate Recognition) compatible too, which checks rego and insurance status!

So in actual fact you COULD get done for- speeding, red light, unregoed and uninsured if you let the rego lapse

Thats one expensive photo

There is now a new category- Elapsed Time Speed cameras. On the M1 freeway between Melbourne and Geelong they are now using an array of cameras that calculate
average speed of vehicles over a given distance. I can find out what red light cameras will be the safety ones in QLD through a mate at Garmin if you want.
Cheers !

There are already two average speed cameras installed in Brissy that I know of, but they are not functional yet as I don't think the legislation has been past for them yet.

And another thing I found out on the weekend. Brisbane will now have mobile speed camera car disguised as Tradie's utes, fibre glass canopies, roof racks, ladders on top etc. I wish they would put some of this revenue back into driver education  .

Absolutely spot on Rob I'm  too
Speed cameras do nothing to stop tailgateing, hogging the rt lane then spearing off across 2/3 lanes to get the off ramp, running lights,U turns at lights when there is no "u turn permitted "signage, fail to indicate lane change, fail to indicate left when leaving roundabouts, burnouts& skids yada yada
Maybe I'm just a grumpy old man lol

Yep, and when you are part of a car club that organisers motorkhanas etc to help teach young people proper car control with proper qualified driving instructors available if they want, you are labelled as "helping teach kids to hoon" by local media. Now that really pissed me off.

Somebody, whether it's Department of Transport or Queensland Police (whom I believe should still have a responsibility as they are the ones that enforce the rules) really have to lift their game with regards to driver education. I agree with all of the things you mentioned Oldie. I'm constantly amazed at the number of P platers that don't know or simply don't follow these common road rules, and they've only just got their licence so they should be fresh in their minds (unlike some of us old farts).

What worries me as i'm on the road all day everyday is the amount of morons ( only nice name I can think of for them!) talking and texting on their phones whilst trying to drive at highway speeds!
Fortunately my new Sportwagon looks EXACTLY like the undercover police cars that are being rolled out right now, right down to the window tint!
You would be surprised how many people slow down or put their phones down around me on the road :D
It probably doesn't help that my business shirt of choice is blue!
So far i've seen a Golf and a toyota trayback as undercover speed camera cars.
The Golf was on Compton Rd and the Toyota was on the southbound side of the highway near the Bribie turnoff.

I say that we do need a much more visible police presence on the roads, if people can see them there they don't tend to do stupid things and also seem to concentrate on the task at hand a little better!
