Just letting you all know that to my disappointment I purchased a $110 bottle of redline shockproof gear oil, and rolled out of the garage and found that every gear became notchy, and some times blocked gears, crunched and carried on... So i swapped straight back to castrol muti-trax and the dramas went away...

Its a little dissapointing when you pour 100 odd bucks down the drain :(

Might not be the same for everyone but I thought i'd give you guys a heads up.

Cheers.

Thats because any of the shock proofs are not mitsubishi compatable gearbox oils. You should have used a 50:50 of MTL and MT90. If you spoke to the Redline importer in WA or where evey they are, they would have told you this too.

On standard cars the shock proof is only good in the transfer case and rear diff.

Take it out and put it in the transfer and rear diff.

Personally you should only use stock weight rated oils for the stock gearbox. I'd be more inclinded of using a cheap oil now to flush your redline for a few thousand kays, then put in a 85:90. If that doesn't fix you syncro problem its bec they are probably dead and need replacing anyway

I used the heaviest of the 3. The only reason i tried it is becasue a mechinic that i go to suggested it, and he assured me that it was what the VR4 boxes and transfers take...

My syncros are all fine, 2nd is a bit notchy but you can expect that.. apparently my car was owned by a dick head for a while..

Im not sure what viscosity the Multi Trax is but its doing a fine job atm, so u suggest only running the shock proof in the transfer and rear diff?

.

you should have used the lightweight shockproof oil. its light blue.

in my experience it takes at least 300-500kms for the oil to get right in and work well.

you will find it will have left alot in the box. it will stay there forever if you dont wash it out. sticky shit.

other than that syntrax is the best.

Youve gotta start looking into oils WITHOUT sulphur based lubricants.

Anything thats is GL-5 is a no no for the VR4

Go plain GL-4 code oil ands youll be ok..even some of the super synthetic stuff claimed to be the best are no good...GL-4 only.

The reason is the Sulphur/phosphorus will eat the yellow metal, also known as your synchros..if it doesnt eat it it will pit an degrade it and slowly F*ck it eventually.

Heres a story for you that may show there is still hope.

My VR4...merging and smacked 2nd one day real hard on about 16 pound at full noise to get into traffic ...gearbox grinded like all hell and went downhill real quick, within 5 minutes it felt like the thing was full of sand...a few more minutes later and i was locked out of first and reverse and i thought more or less it was game over..I had to ride 2nd gear and then pop it into 1st...i couldnt downshift into 2nd without a grind, even by match revving and giving it 10 seconds between shifts...
I dumped the oil that looked more like Champagne metallic paint, there was some shit in there, big bits too..filled it with Auto trans fluid and went for a drive, did this 5 times till all the shit was gone, then i filled it with new oil, went for a drive, flushed it out with the final round of oil and 3 months later it is still shifting like new and doesnt even grind anymore...weird hey...i used Castrol VMX-M...worked a miracle

i had the same problem, i only hope it didnt do any damage to the box.

i emailed 'redline' and told them to change thier companies recommendations, she was ment to ring me as ''We never like to hear about customer disatisfaction." still havnt heard back.

I can't believe you used the heavy shock!! Damm thats so wrong. The only reason you "mechanic" recommended it is they prob put it in a old tired worn out gearbox one day and it stopped the sloppy slop.

Heavy shock is a 250 weight oil cold, i have used it before and its dog shit. I don't care they rate it at 75/90 bec it isn't and does not feel like a 75/90 for a long shot.

I currently use a mix of super light and light weight for my dog box and its very nice. Prob could go thicker to cushion the dogs a bit but not worth it. I used light weight on a stock box and it was ok, nothing worth emailing home about. The 50:50 of MTL and MT90 was perfect for a syncro box (well for my syncro box anyway).

read this at the bottom of the super light shock proof

A shifter kart is dog engaged.

Light weight is recommended in 2 and 4 stroke motorcycles, again dog tooth. Heavy shock, don't bother!

That penright 75/90 i think from memory works well too. I heard good things with castrol vmx80.

yeh use the lightweight, not the heavy, thats just overkill

We use shockproof Lightweight in the box, transfer and diffs and its sweet as.

(and before anyone asks the trans is a RS syncro box not Dog) :)
