Redline Lightweight Shockproof

Good write up!!

We strongly recommend using a GL-4 spec transmission oil in the Mitsubishi manual transmissions. This oil offers good protection for the gears and bearings against wear out. Do not use any oil that has a GL-5 rating in the transmission, for these oils will not give the best shift quality because the GL-5 rating is too slippery for the synchronizers to be effective for high rpm shifts.

There are several GL-4 gear oils on the market for you to choose from. Redline MTL is excellent for daily drivers & weekend warriors and those who live in cold climates while Redline MT-90 is recommended for road racing type service. Both of these oils have proven themselves as a worthy oil for those who want to shift fast, yet are also looking for long service life from their transmission. There are concerns about using Redline's Shockproof gear oil inside manual transmissions. While this is truly an excellent product, it has been found that the heavy paraffin particles are quickly centrifuged out of the oil and build up inside the center diff housing and around the synchronizers and inside of the gearshafts. After several oil changes this build up may block oiling passages inside the gearshafts that lubricate the needle bearings and may also reduce the overall effectiveness of the synchronizers. Therefore we do not suggest using Shockproof in the transmission unless the transmission is to be serviced often or a dog box.

Another transmission oil that works very well is Diaqueen Super Multi part # MZ313376 and it available at the Mitsubishi dealer. While this oil is strictly specified for the EVO-MR 6 speed transmission, it also works great in the 5 speed transmissions and we recommend it.

TRANSFER CASE
click

89-94 DSM: The recommended oil for all transfer cases in the Mitsubishi DSMs GL-5 90w Hypoid gear oil. If the vehicle is going to be drag raced, road raced or being operated in climates that are 45*F or warmer we highly recommend using Redline Shockproof Heavy for it is an excellent oil for the transfer case. Also, you may use a GL-5 Hypoid gear oil that has an ISO of 280-320 if temps are 45* or warmer because of the heat load that is generated is sufficient enough to thin the oil out so it doesn't aerate, web, foam up or cause lubrication issues due to the oil being too thick to perform properly. If do not have access to the recommended oils you can use any high quality straight GL-5 Hypoid gear oil that is a straight 90 weight or an ISO index of 220.

REAR AXLE

89-94 DSM: The recommended oil for the rear axle of all the Mitsubishi DSMs GL-5 90w Hypoid gear oil. If the vehicle is going to be drag raced, road raced or being operated in climates that are 45*F or warmer we highly recommend using Redline Shockproof Heavy for it is an excellent oil for the rear axle. was just curious as to what evo201 would say since he sells them so surely he would know more about the oil. :)

ok as i sell it and dont make it i wont pretend to be a expert on the subject but i have emailed a link to this very topic to steve from redline (he is the qld rep) and i have asked him to join and respond. I think if people want correct anwsers the only way to get them is to ask the people who bring it into the country not just some re-sellers

we should hear from him soon

cheers

I'll just do what Mr.Gears bacially tells me here. (Still waiting on reply :p) for Gearbox and Rear Axel/Diff oil recoomendations, otherwise I'll just put in what Mitsu recommend I guess.

why dont you try NEO gearbox oil, ive heard they are better than redline and suited for synchro boxes too.

i have used the NEO RPS 75W-90 HD Gear Lube which is a gl2 through to gl6. it was recommended to me buy the guy who did my clutch in my gsr and sileighty and i haven't had any problems with any of the gearbox i have used it in. it shift nice and smooth even when its cold which is an issue i had when i first got my gsr. As for the redline shockproof stuff i wouldn't use it as its more designed for dogboxes.

thats my 2cents...

cheers

just curious stealmy, what made you decide to go shockproof?

on the old GSR Yahoo email list, going back probably 4 years or so it was a hot topic. Some people swore by the Redline and others were using syntrax. I had Oil World up the road from me who sell the Redline so I decided to give it a try and I've been pretty happy with it.

In saying that, I may try the MTL or MT-90 next and see what difference it makes.

im changing mine today....

Ill now have shockproof in the Xfer and rear diff, and MTL/MT-90 in the box.

I have a great contact for redline oils, he also sells royal purple and European market Castrol stuff. :)

has the gsr got lsd rear? i had shockproof in my rear diff+xfer back then, and the rear was locking up. ended up using castrol lsx90 or something like, and never had any problems.

AH! That's the stuff I was looking for (evo6 MR oil).. I read a writeup of it on some DSM forum, and they said it was magic stuff.. the guy who was using it just had no clue what it was called, just that it came from mitsubishi itself. When it comes time to change the syntrans, I reckon I'll give that a go.

are you talking about the castrol?

Just read this in the Castrol Syntrans info.... Now that's telling me that they have specifically done some testing on Mitsu AWD boxes  CASTROL FTW!!!

Im not saying you're wrong Rob, but of course they'd say they're the best- thats what marketing is all about!

I have Castrol VMX 80 in my gearbox at the moment- its a GL4 SAE 75W/80 but have found it to make the gearbox feel alot more notchyer than the previous oil that was in there (unknown)

Mite give this one a whirl next, see how it goes

The oil you have in your car is designed to protect the gearbox and is for performance applications hence the 75/80 rating. I would put some addictive in the oil just to see if it would solve your notchyness problem!

Jeff at Tech///sport puts the castrol one in his race evo, and he did put in my car a couple of weeks ago,

it feels good just like the VMX80 , but being synthetic it will take alot more to kill it, not to bad for price to $32ltr

grrrrr alot of ppl have made some good points im still not sure on what oil to use.the workshop that we take our car to has always use redline iv had problams with selecting gears at high rpm.i thought going to a evo3 box would help the shifting problams

I went out today and boguht my new oils

Castrol Magnatec 10W 40 - http://www.castrol.com/castrol//productdetailmin.do?categoryId=8000009&contentId=6008598

i was using the ff lsd motul stuff, but quickly realised that it is gl-5 oil which is not good for the brass in the gearbox. So i went for the diaqueen in the box and redline lightweight shockproof in the xfer and rear diff.

I have alaso changed to MTL/MT90 in the box and lightweight shockproof in the xfer and rear diff - its working beautifully.
