Hoping some one can help with some info re the above with a 4G93T motor. Have check out the usual ie fuel pressure etc , and all appears ok. Problem is from anything more than idle ie light, part and heavy load, the mixtures are richer than 11.0 : 1 AFR's. Black smoke spews from the exhaust under load, if it isnt misfiring from carboned up plugs. The history of the car and owner are unknown. 1995 model

So.... 1. Injectors. What colour and part numbers do standard injectors have ? Mine have these numbers on them934 7np 016 MDL390, and are a white/pale yellow.

2.AFM. Part numbers ?? Mine has 449 3y25 E5T05371 on it.

3. ECU. Mine has pt number MD187040 E2T38378. It also has a Powerchip installed. Any one in Adelaide got a standard chip/ ECU I can borrow ??

Can anyone help ?

Cheers Mike

All the part numbers you list are factory equipment. Mitsis tend to run a tad richer than other cars, and if youve increased boost and free'd the exhaust up the ECU will compensate to a certain degree by dumping more fuel in.

Cheerup, mine was down to 10:1 at full boost  WhenI talked to the dyno operator he said if he was tuning it he would only lean it out to 11.5ish:1 anyway. If Mitsis hate ANYTHING its being leaned out too much

in the mornings when i turn my car on, it spits out black stuff..

and apparently when i step on it.. my mate said it runs very rich as well..

is this a worrying problem? i thought it was normal

Rich running

Guys, the O2 sensor works fine at idle, and I can watch it cycling on my oscilloscope. The Snap On scanner shows all normal temp inputs. This should run in closed loop and give AFR's of 14.4 : 1 up until moderate load ( just like other Mitsi turbos I've had). This is ridicuosly rich at part and light load. I was just wondering basically if the injectors had been replaced with bigger units( hence the query on pt numbers), or if the AFM is an original item and or changed to one not matched to ECU/injectors. Had plenty of practice and know how on VR4's and Evo 4g63, but not on 4G93 Lancers !

Cheers Mike

Yeah mine runs rich (black smoke) on boosting it hard. I just take it how it is now. One day i'll get around to installing the safc2 and seeing if i can stop it.

i'd be very inclined towards thinking that it's the powerchip you have on the ecu that's causing this.

Hi,
My car is very similar. Under moderate load, when the ecu is out of closed loop it is quite rich... never had an A/F meter on it, but definately blows a lot of black smoke. I think it is a common thing with GSR's, but your powerchip may also be putting in more fuel and making the situation worse... After I changed the spark plugs on mine it was slightly better, but once the plugs carboned up a bit things slowly returned to the way it was.
I am going to go down the SAFC2 route also.

leaky:

valve stem seals
BOV

I have the same symptoms and these two issues

wynns stop smoke works a treat (temporary measure obviously)

you cant fix running rich with an oil additive. ;)

thats if the smoke is black not grey/blue, then all the additive will do is thickin the oil so it doesnt burn away as fast.

but too your problem, mitsi's run rich, its not un common to see them at 10:1 under boost completly stock.

how ever... in your case, if your concerned, i would do an intake pressure test, maybe run a few tanks of injector cleaner, replace the fuel filter and a new set of NGK spark plugs gapped correctly.

but as said earlier, its probably your "powerchip"

wind the boost up lots, it'll lean out eventually... no dont do this

correct!! aka the temporary measure, not fix :)

I've had the valve stem seal issue for the 7 years Ive had the car, and the HKS BOV i had before was ext vent and it leaked a little, that caused smokage naturally, ripped that out, and fitted an evo 2 BOV, piss weak POS leaks above 12psi (diconnected it and blocked the other end... she ran sweet on 20psi :))... but of course car runs much better with a plumback fitted :) .. or a GOOD valve functioning ext vent BOV.. IMO

I am a big NON fan of additives.. I was very surprised this did the trick for my last day on the road *pout* for now.. so i cant tell you how long the wynns lasts, but you only use half a bottle at a time, i think it was like $19.. bought it in July :(

As to4garret says, do a decent service/ leak check then go from there
