Shorten intercooler piping, tune?

I have a typical evo 1-3 intercooler piping set up which loops around the front. I'm going to to change it so that it goes over the manifold and under the radiator for hot side and straight from tb through the side of the radiator for the cold side. This will reduce quite a lot of piping and lag.

So my question is will I need to get the ecu retune as full boost will come on quicker or can I get away with it? (Piping size will be the same)

Currently running chipped ecu tuned for 19psi, stock turbo.

[sub]yeah velocity* in our cars doesn't really work like that unless you running huge power[/sub]
 
My 1c is that you won't have to have your car re-tuned for the shortened intercooler piping route.

I'll be interested to hear your feedback on how much faster you perceive the boost response to be after you make the change - I changed too much at once when I shortened my intercooler piping length so couldn't really compare the before and after.

I have gone to a w2a setup. So basically my piping is 2 90* elbows. About 12" long in total. Not including the cooler core.
So I taper from 45mm out of the j pipe to 76mm into the w2a, then taper from 76mm back down to 70mm into the tb...
 
I run a greddy front mount on mine which has both intake and outlet on the same side which shortens the piping a lot. Boost response is awesome. IMO the shorter the better. Have a look at where the intercoolers are placed on jgtc cars especially the surpas when they ran them with a 3sgte 4cylinder. Quite a few well set up drift cars run intercoolers like this as well to shorten the plumbing and improve throttle response
 
You should have your tune checked with any mods, even summer and winter fuels... with my experience, the actual tune wont change as load points are govened by revs and map, so it wont effect spool time ect..
the only setting you might have to changr is fuel tip-in, as boost pressure will raise quicker, thus needing a touch more fuel... but chances are you will never notice this as the change would be that small...

Imo this doesnt shorten the air path at all. It just makes the air turn around in the cooler not in the pipe. Also, surely the restrictions across the core are more because you have effectively 1/2 its flow for 2x the distance?
Im sure there is proof that I am wrong, but my brain works pretty simply.
 
Jack the core runs vertically with a top tank and bottom tank so the air runs a lot shorter length by nearly 2 meters. The volume of the core is slightly thicker than standard Evo but volume is not much bigger. Is a very smooth path the end tanks are a nice smooth shape. It's a gt race spec intercooler but volume is they key here. For example if you change from 2 inch to 3 inch piping at the same length it's going to take longer to fill with pressurized air in the larger piping isn't it.
 
so it took me a while, i've only done the hot side mainly because the old route was looping around, doesn't look neat and rubbing onto the chassis and headlight. results, there's only a slight difference in spool up (under 100rpm difference). I will eventually route the cold side through the hole on the left of the radiator and see how that goes. anyways here's some pics
