I'm thinking about buying a small 4x4 to muck around in. Nothing expensive at all. Would be great if I could pick something decent up for $5k.

A mate has a Suzuki Sierra and they seem to be pretty popular for people who want something cheap to run.

I know a couple of people on here are into 4x4ing, what are my options for a cheap 4cyl 4x4 that I can just raise and chuck some big tyres on?

Are they? There's actually a mint looking one for sale in Adelaide.

Are parts hard to get for em? Whats the go for sort of entry level 4x4 stuff? 2" lift and bigger wheels?

Don't know mate.

Mate, my cousin had one and I thought it was a toy
until we took it too the Stockton sand dunes and it was great!
It handled full-on steep + rutted paths piece
of piss. I was seriously suprised.

FJ70, BJ70, LJ70 landcruiser budera

or the 73 series MWB.

All seriously capable "small" 4x4's. All under 10k, 70's might be around 5k but be careful.

Whats wrong with an RVR!!??

Looking for more than grip dude.. Want to have something that can climb over shite.

Lorrie what should I be looking out for on the 70's? Do they have common faults?

I would say just look out coz they are old as shit! otherwise great, my old man has one. as well as a suzuki sierra that has been nothing but trouble, keeps blowing headgaskets due to the liner style motor, another whole motor would probly fix it but thats $$
Nissan Patrol shorty would be were I would be looking tho.

Patrol MWB's are IMPOSSIBLE to find parts for and are stupidly expensive as they are RACED in the offroad comps.

7x series landcruiser faults are limited to:

Front window's will regularly require new rubbers as mud penetrates and destroys seals
Where the side mirrors bolt on, there will be rust. It's a fact of life.
Front tailshaft splines wil be worn, front diff may be full of goo if it doesn't get much work. 7x series MUST be driven in 4x4 for about 1 hour a month. it's written in the operators manual or the front diffs are cactus.
The rear lsd doesnt' work from the factory, don't get stressed.
Other than that, they are ROCK SOLID and you can slam them into all sorts of shit (aka trees/rocks) and they are fine.

My 73 had 6 inches of lift (2 inch body, 4 inch susp.) lockers front and rear, 33x12.5's and it would go prettttttyyyy much anywhere.

As for you guys saying put sr20's and shit in them... umm.. 4x4ing requires LOW POWER, HIGH TORQUE motors that have HIGH compression for hillwork. Please drive some proper 4x4 tracks first :D

I'm off to flinders in a few weeks, next trip for my beast.

My current 7x is a 75 LWB ute (HZJ75RP) with 4 inches of lift (suspension), 33x12.5's, front air locker, rear lsd. HID headlights, winch, etc and apart from overhang from my camping tray it's just as capable as my 73.

Although if i was doing weekenders i would squarely look at a HZJ73 or a BJ74 over -any- other model of 7x series. I bought my ute because i'm taking it on a 3 month "excursion" and i needed the extra room/fuel capacity.

The pick of the entire bunch is the BJ74 which is a 3.4 litre turbo diesel. The motors are bulletproof, they have suspension seats and the turbo means you can drive them in traffic/on the highway. Also comp ratio is good for hill descents.

Just remember, they aren't the prettiest things on the planet.... but really... Dents are like scratches, but with better stories.

Cheers man. I'm gonna try and keep my options open and not be too specific about what I'm looking at cos I don't want to spend a lot of coin.

Are SWB Pajeros any good too?

In all seriousness, a 70 would be the cheapest thing you could buy. Or if you're seriously only going to use it for runs into the hills/bush, a 73 might be worth 2k more as it can actually fit camping gear and won't roll over if a butterfly goes past.

I'm not trying to be biased (although I sound it) but the other "cheap" options just won't stand up to the deal. You'll kill them

Fred is a SWB Pajjy from around 1990 with a sigma engine and fairy floss gearbox that has never seen dirt in his entire life since he rolled off the production line somewhere overseas ;) Fred doesn't fit anyone taller than 6'1 without bashing their head into the roof in a big way.

Hands up anyone who's been 4x4ing and belted the roof over a big fall/climb/treetrunk/etc?? *hands up*
