Some noise in the drivetrain somewhere :(

This all began when I would occasionally here a *clang* sound when either taking off when or when breaking/nearly to a complete stop. Now I know if the car is jacked up to say, change a tyre, if you rotate the wheel a bit I can replicate this sound slightly. Therefore my question is, does anyone have a rough idea of what/where the problem is and if its common.

Also recently I've now noticed a new noise (oh yay). Say if your going down a hill, maybe 3rd gear at 60km/h, without the foot on the accelerator, I can hear this noise, sounds like some sort of ticking towards the middle to rear of the car, im not really sure how to explain it, but Im guessing this is linked to my first issue above? I think I need to record the sound, problem is I think if I try, it will just record wind/exhaust note

Can you reproduce it over bumps aswell(the first one). My swaybar linkes had snapped and they used to make a noise like that when taking off and just as I stopped, but would also do it as I went over bumps, especialy one wheel at a time.

i think the first noise might just be slack in the driveline happens to me to..and the noise when braking could be movment from your brake pad in the caliper or even your cv joints as for the other problem i have no idea

get FCUKed! you have that tick tick noise!

if you go slow it sounds like a tick tick tick and if it is fast it sounds like a metalic high pitched rattle, like a loose dry bearing cage?

very light throttle or coasting, and it sounds like the centre of the car, you hear it when you go past guild rails, walls etc.

if it is i've ben chasing that bastard for months!

My guess is it is one of 3 things := uni joint / centre bearing / pinion bearing in the diff

Pm me if you fix it.

with the first noise try lower control arm bushes. probably left side! thats where the oils leaks go

I have a spare transfer case i might do a swap and see.

I actually heard a truck go passed the other day and it had the exact same sound, it sounded like the centre bearing.

Being a truck there is some distance between the diff centre and gearbox.
but it has the tick tick sound at slow speeds like 10 / 20 kph

might check the oil in the transfer case too, see if it has any!

and i dont think it was the transfer case!

check your dust cover on the yoke of the tailshaft !!! this is the bit that goes into the trans case, it's like a cup in a cup.

mine was loose and could easily flap around giving a ting sound as it bounces around it the outer cup of the transfer case. I just put two generous dabs of silicone on the outside and sliped it back into the transfer case.

It may not fix your noise but check it, It just could be that simple.

you could get to it with out removing the transfercase or tailshaft

Funny thing was last week it wasn't doing it. Its like say, a rock in a tin can rattling/ticking type sound. When I bring it to my mechanic, I'll make sure its fixed, otherwise I'll go to someone who will fix it because I must have everything perfect

I had a little tingling noise coming from under the bonnet when I went to Tasmania, I found out the hard way what it was.... on the side of the road in the heat trying to fix it...
It was the adjuster bolt for the power steering pump had come loose and was tingling against the pulley, eventually grabbing the pulley and bringing it to a grinding hault that resulted in a terrible screaching noise that was the belt slipping. I was able to get the belt off with the factory toolkit 12/14 openender spanner and drive the rest of the day around the windyest strech of road in the state with no power steering. I fixed it that night with the same tools as well!

it still very well could of been in the tran case but the dust cover moving around had the "Right" sound.

O the sound used to come and go, but the longer you leave it the more frequent it became.

In the end i thought the engine was detonating at times. :cry:

sorry to bring up an old thread!

I seem to have a similar rattling noise from the tail shaft region on my 63T converted GSR.

It rattles when there is no load, so when slowing down at low speed.

Funnily enough, it doesnt seem to do it with 2 or more people in the car... :S

I dont get this tick tick noise you speak of... perhaps mine is a different issue?

yeah thats exactly what i've been thinking.

I have checked a while ago and there was some level of movement in the tailshaft at the carrier bearing, so I have been assuming its that.


Any ideas as to where I can get a carrier bearing at all?

How hard are these to swap over?

Can also be the centre universal, as seen in this pic on the left. The bearing is on the right, I beleive this as mentioned ^^^ is the first to bugger up.
