OK, so I just picked up a set of new wheels, after shipping my sweet watanabes off... (they only weighed 6.7 kg each rim  ).. they're white. I think it's a primer white, judging from the way it looks. Anyway, I want to spray them silver, I don't really want to go to the expense of powdercoating, and to be honest, the wheels are a bit battle scarred and the powdercoating would look funny (uneven surface).

So, I'm going to use VHT wheel paint to spray them. My question is this : if I spray them black BEFORE spraying them silver (I am going to use # SP186, rally silver), will it give a darker finish? Or is the VHT paint thick enough that it won't have that effect.

This is the colour on bare wheels

So, given that, if I spray over the white, will it conversely be lighter? The colour in the pic is pretty much what I want, but a bit darker won't bother me either.[/url]

wtf is that pic about? uninflatable tyres! I think it depends on how much of the silver you use, if you only put on a light coat it would have some impact, do a trial on a scrap of tin, the back of your shed door etc and see how it comes out...

Ah I see, I was planning on doing a couple of coats, so it probably wont impact the colour.. nice, thanks.

Oh, you can get flush valve caps, if you want to put air in them the cap comes off and you can screw a filler in.

I dont think spraying them with anything (except Etch Primer)will have any impact on the final colour because I will suggest you give them quite a few coats and let them dry COMPLETLY for at least a couple of days because they are the part that will get the most damage, also you should try to putty up the gutter rash as you will get a better end result...

Already sprayed the top, the rash makes them look better (they're not severely rashed, just little dings here and there) :D The colour I ended up with was aluminium, it looks good against the maroon of the VR4.

I think I'm only going to do the face of the wheel and the underside of the spokes, the inside of the rim is a pain in the arse to clean off because of the texture and theres not much point spraying the part of the wheel that the tyre covers. Plus it will save me money on paint haha...

I just gave my wheels a really good wash and degrease, Masked it up then hit it with regular enamal pressure pack paint. Probably the best $30 I've ever spent.

After a while they might need a touch up to hide stone chips etc.
Just a tip, put the can into hot water for a minute, It builds the pressure up and provides a finer better spray.

Be carefull as I think paint is porus (spelling?) meaning that your tyres will always go flat, I remember my old man had a lot of trouble when he got a new set of Sunrasia rims for his L300 4x4 van that were painted all over with them going down all the time, I think he got them sandblasted and powder coated in the end.

GSR7OY, you should definitely clear coat them too, I did the initial coats of colour (about 4 thin coats), and it looked pretty shitty, however I clear coated them today and they look 100 times better... to be honest they look exactly like I wanted them to.. lucky..

I put the cans of paint and the wheels in the sun while I was doing it, worked pretty well and even. Some parts look a little screwed (bits of fluff and shit sticking to the paint from me carrying them around, with windy bits inbetween), but overall, especially considering how cheap a solution it was, I'm pretty happy.. I suppose eventually I'll get them powdercoated, as it looks a LITTLE ghetto but.. not for a while yet... :D

As far as stone chips go, the stupid amounts of clear coat I used should protect them nicely for a while... luckily with clear coat if you go a bit overboard it isn't too noticeable haha.. only one drip on four wheels, and I've never sprayed anything ever.

Thanks for the tip on paint being porous, as it is there's no paint where the tyre will seal, should be fine.
