Another quick one.
Looking at my old rack in bits, to take the tie rods off you just unscrew them correct?
Can unscrewing them twist anything inside or damage the seals or anything?

I got one over east about to be sent just gonna get the bloke to unscrew the tie rods so shipping is much cheaper.

Yep, all you need to do is to tap the tabs straight and put the body ( wrap cloth around the body and DON"T CRUSH IT ) into a vice and undo the inner tie rods. I just did mine yesterday when I picked up a SE Rack to convert mine back to power again. Check all of the inners when you get the rack and make sure there is no slop in any of them, one of the SE inners had a tiny bit of movement so I swapped them both for my VR4 inners.

Would you guys recon the fluid seen in the pic is leaking from the rack or from the transfer case?

The bloke who ripped it out feels its from the transfer case.

But one of my mates recons its definitely from the rack after seeing the pics. If it was form the transfer case it would be more to the left of the pic.

AS my transfer case and PS rack are out of the car i cant line it up and see if it could be from the transfer case.

Notice the top section where the shaft with the spline connects to the steering column is dry? even down to about the threads is dry.

By the looks of the subframe member when i was removing the rack something was leaking onto that and finding its way to the rack.

The gearbox, transfer and intake side of the head and block also had this same residue on it.

I'm putting the replacement rack in today, is there some way of flushing the power steering system out so i'm replacing the whole system (rear rack as well) with fresh fluid?

Rather than just topping it up with a liter or so of new fluid. If i do this do i need to prime the rack up in any way? Workshop manual doesn't cover any of this.

Just take the return line of the reservoir off and let it dump into a bucket and fill the reservoir up while idling the car?

In the workshop manual it says it takes 3.9 litres. (book states dextron 2 so ill use dextron 3)

Hi guys, a bit of an update on my rack that was repaired but i thought was still poked.
I now have a mate working at Pedders who has inspected & tested my car and his original diagnosis after driving home proved correct.
The 4WS is doing random shit.

So i have had him remove the rear rack & tierods.
he also fitted new front castor bushes as the old ones were a bit shagged, he has also put a decent 4 corner alignment on it.

It has transformed my ride back into a car!

god know's what the 4ws does sometimes; i read everything on this forum and others and can directly relate to what people said their car would do. mine did the same.

But now its good to go! totally different, predictable & confidence-inspiring.
HAPPY DAYS AGAIN

Was it to do with the 4ws pump or rack?

Did he remove the 4ws pump in the diff or just remove the lines?

Good stuff to get it sorted mate!

im just not sure & neither was he or his boss. He has left the pump on the diff as he had nothing to bung it up with. blocked off lines and removed

stoked it drives like a car again and a good one at that!

Just keep an eye on the pump on the rear.

Without fluid, it may possibly seize!

Pull it out and cut the end off it and reinstall it.
OR
loop it with some fluid in the lines.

You're safe then!

If you want to try something cool, run a rear diff cooler using that 4ws pump!

Run the lines to a small oil cooler and make it feed out of the drain line and drill and tap a hole in the case to feed the fresh cool oil to the top of the diff.

I've always thought about doing that but I don't have the 4ws viscous diff that retains that gear that turns the pump.

The car is there at the moment!

The good thing is that the exhaust is off the car at least!!

I just got a price for the overhaul from a steering rack joint, it costs ..................................................... $550.00 alone just for rebuilding the rack.
Not cheap!

Oh well, better than having fluid all over my new exhaust!

Just got a phone call from Springy and they're gonna pull the rack out now and send it away for an overhaul.

At least there is no 4ws on the AMG to much around with...
