They're caught between a rock and a hard place, really, theres no way to stop groups of dickheads in commodores driving round throwing bottles and egging each other on to do burnouts and stuff, unless you make it illegal for them to congregate in that situation. I understand where they're coming from.. but on the other hand, it just means people will buy their own car and then there mates will just be egging them on from the outside of the car instead of the inside.

Well actually Dre, if I really think about it...

1 car with 4 people in it crash = 4 people injured

now theres 2 cars, with 2 people in it. This doubles the chance of crashes (percentage of crashes stay the same), and therefore the number of people injured will be exactly the same.

Therefore there are still 4 people injured.

Then the government will go "oh accidents have doubled since last year" and apply more lame rules. Having said that, I do see your point with the "mates egging the driver on", but I think this is more a driver responsibility which needs to be taught/educated, rather than appling this crappy new law.

The other problem with the government is, they treat accendents/deaths by physical numbers, not by a percentage. There might be 10 extra deaths per another 10,000 new drivers. They simply cannot state, oh more deaths are on our road, so all cars need to have airbags/stabilty control blah blah blah, because its always going to increase with population. They need to look at both numbers & percentage, rather than just the numbers to see how they are really travelling.

Also $80 for a taxi is expensive for an 18-21 year old. Its their problem, and they will do anything to go from/to a place. I know I was only making around $80 a week when I was that age believe it or not. Plus, I would rather give my mate $20 for the petrol/lift rather than a taxi.

I would not expect a P plater to have to buy a new car with stability control/airbags etc.

I'm all for introducing measures to stop young people killing themselves on the roads, and you should too.

Everyone knows a young person who has been killed in an accident- now go to their family and tell them that this rule is stupid, and see what they say.....

Well if they didnt see any sense in what im trying to state, then nothing will change what they want to hear/think/say. I simply do not agree this rule will fix this issue (and yes, I too am all for introducing measures to reduce injuries). I guess I'll make a note of the tolls for the end of this year and tolls for the end of next year and compare and see what the government has to say.

Very good point there, the government is slowly waking up to the fact that the drivers with the highest risk are usualy in the least safe cars, so I guess the aim with the power restirctions is to point them in the right direction.

They rant and rave how a certain levle of safety should be standard and such, but the problem is our driving population is growing in number and the road toll should in theory go up, but this is offset by the new safety systems that are getting incorporated into newer cars. They said 1 million new cars were sold last year, I wonder how many new drivers we got? Less than that I assume, but these new cars wouldent have been bought by new drivers.
