Hi all couple of questions/clarifications.

1.Can a tdo4 be hiflowed/ 14/16g wheel etc?
2.Is it recommended, if it can be done?
3. who will do it and guarantee the turbo once rebuilt in Melb?
4. what would the cost be?

Yes
NO
Dont know
Lots! Seriously dont bother.Get a td05 :wink: 8)

SERIOUS :wink:

Agree'd, the TD04 has a tiny 5cm exhaust housing. A VR-4 14b with 6cm housing or Evo 16g with 7cm housing will open up a whole new world of top end that GSRs still retaining TD04s only dream about. There will actually still be decent boost past 5500rpm (Shock horror!!) A TD05 will take you to 7000rpm with minimal drop over the rev range.

I concur!

15psi to redline on mine :wink:

i know of a gsr that had this done to it.. it ran low 12s.. cost around 1k to do.. if you have done everything to suit the TD04L ie.. exhaust dump/piping whatever.. then i suggest you do it.. but if your car is fairly stock and your looking to mod it from the begginning.. then its probably best to go the Evo 3 turbo route.. that said i would probably go TD05H-14B hiflowed with B16g wheel and still retain the rear 060 housing..

on my GSR im getting a turbo built capable of 250-300kw still retaining the 060 rear housing.. if this becomse a restriction we will replace it with the 070 rear housing but for now it should be ok.. wanna get some times on the board first.

no you do not have to do that you can get an after market dump made or save the number of the side of the dump about 5mile worth then it will clear.
and i have biult greengsrs car and sexygsr can back it up and that car is still going strong ass today.

Due to the crap rules that apply to rally cars we cant change to a td05(legally :wink: ) and have to have a 34mm restrictor in it.

So what can be done to improve on a td04 without the option of changing?

Interested to see what you guys know bout this.

Machine the comp cover out to accept a 14B front wheel.. and machine the rear housing to accept a TD05H-14B rear wheel.. then u will have a VR4 turbo ;)

Not quite, you'll still be stuck with the TD04s 5cm exhaust housing which will limit top end power more than a VR-4s 6cm housing would.

You can upgrade the Compressor wheel to a 15g (Compressor housing can be machined to suit) I'm not a fan of the older style single blade 'b' compressor wheels. The exhaust wheel can be backcut to improve top end further sacrificing a little response. Attack the stock exhaust manifold with a die grinder or dremel to smooth things out a tad and match the exhaust ports on the head to improve flow.

A talk with a decent turbo specialist will come up with a recipie that will work for you.

back to td05 question. what happens with the oil and water lines, are the in the in same loctions as the td04, also are they the same size thread as the td05.. if this is all the same basically all thats has to be done to put a td05 14b turbo on a 4g93, is use vr4 dump to clear oil filter, and have the exhaust manifold milled to match the turbo. please correct, me if i'm wrong.
and obviously the front pipe has to be changed to suit tdo5.

I'm not sure but I think the shaft is smaller on the TD04 over the TD05, When I was doing this exersize I was told i was limited buy the shaft sizing and the bigest wheels i could get was a 14b and a 16g small and a shit load of machine work, (wastegate needs enlarging too) It would be cheaper to purchase a different turbo ie TD05 ... I went the 20G :)

mark at GT Pumps would be able to give you better info.

as for the rally restrictions, Go for mid torque, biggest comp wheel you can fit and port exhaust housing and wastegate. polish the internals of the comp cover. will look std from outside, but will do as best it can with restrictor fitted.

Another option. change class and fit a 20g

Thanks for the idea on turbo mods for the rally car, i'll look in to this over the off season and hopefully have something sorted for next year.

As for changing classes, there is no catergory in oz that is any different.
PRC(GroupA)= standard turbo+34mm restrictor.
GroupN= standard turbo+32mm restrictor
WRC= homolgated turbo+34mm restrictor.

Speaking of which, one of the teams running GpN Evo9's in the WRC just got busted for an illeagal restrictor that somehow opens up when out on the stages but narrows for scruitineering.
