Timing belt change

If yo can wait till next week pm Jetgsr (Troy) and we can look at doing it for you.
$1600 seems like a pretty high price to me though.
I've also never used a Mitsubishi boxed water pump on mine. If you really want one they are much cheaper to source in the states. Where abouts are you located ?

I'm in Ipswich. Sounds like that could be a plan. I checked out water pumps and gates do one for vr4 strangely the part number is the same for Evo 1-3 . I rung meek and they sell ghb pumps which carry a 2 yr warranty and are $90.00 the gates I can get for just under $150 and apparently they are pretty good. I just don't understand how a mechanic can say 5hrs when some guys on here recon they can do it in 1.5hrs??? Are you fellas changing the seals and bearings and removing the rocker cover to lock the cams in place?? My guy I usually use wants to take the motor out completely so I told him to take a hike

theres only like 4 seals to change.

crank two cams(which you'll need to take the cam gear off for which mean you'll need to reset the timing anyway) and if it's a 63 the balance shaft.

tbh you shouldn't need to do seals unless they're leaking. most would just do the belts bearings and waterpump

Good idea to do the bearings as well and a GENUINE Mitsi Tensioner. Look at extremepsi for these also (create an account with your shipping address and the shipping quotes are more reasonable than just selecting australia.)
If you dont change the tensioner, at least make sure who ever changes the belt, puts a pin in the genuine tensioner when taking it out (see VFAQ) so it doesnt slide all the way out, as when they push it back in quickly with a vice ect, it can be damaged. I found a 1mm drill bit was good to use as a "grenade pin" for the tensioner.

We are both south side as well. Troy is back from holidays this weekend, I'll have a chats him but I can't see it being a problem. I run Ge same water pump that Meek sells. It will be fine for you. I also use the drill bit method to set the tension and have done so for the last 8 years or so, it's the easiest accurate way to set it.
I'll be at this weekends test and tune if you are heading out otherwise we can talk next week.
Cheers

Hey this mite be a dumb question. But once the car has been sitting overnight is it normal to have a little slack in the belt between the cam gears. I read on a dsm tuner forum heaps of the yanks were getting paranoid about it!!! Some supposed experts said it was normal due to exhaust cam relaxing and slight movement in the cams overnight due to valve spring tensions. This made sense to me. Others were arguing that it was due to worn tensioners, stretched out old belts and the poor dude who originally asked the question didn't really get common answer from varying opinions. Can anyone WITH MECHANICAL knowledge please let me know if this is normal or not??? Belt isn't loose enough to be able to move it side to side on the cam gears. Had about 10mm in each direction up and down.belt was nice and tight between cam gear and tensioners etc. is getting changed very soon anyway just wondering if it okay and I can drive it or park it up till the belt gets done?? Cheers

Hey has anyone got a vr4 lower timing belt cover in reasonably good condition. I need one for this job ASAP. Timing belt is half done and mechanic wants to replace it. If you can it will def be worth it for you financially... Cheers

Sure did $250.00 with a 3 week wait. Cheaper from Mitsi surprisingly!! Tim put me onto extreme psi in the states as its the quickest option and my mechanic laughed and then said f$&k off to my suggestion of waiting 3-4 weeks he's flat out busy and needs the space so car really can't stay to long fair enough

Right. He's the one that wants to replace it, but he laughs, says fuck off and it's your problem that it's at least a 3 week wait for the part? Nice mechanic you have there!

Had a look and from diagrams they appear to be slightly different a bit cheaper though just not keen in wasting money on a hope it will fit. Thanks anyway mate. Considering what the plastic things prob cost to make its daylight robbery everywhere u look . Lol

Nah Omad he was only fooling around but I just find it frustrating it takes so long to get the parts and he was on the same page. I've had nothing but good dealings with him in the past and he doesn't cut corners which from my experience is hard to find so yeah I'd say he is a pretty good mechanic. Nothing wrong with being straight up and honest
