i noticed that , I think stainley bought Sidchrome out

the last stainley screw driver set I bought, I broke all of them doing easy tasks, and I went and got the kincrome torque master set, there really strong and you wont kill the screws either, also the allen keys are great to

My personal sets are

Kingchrome - socket set (80% of the work I do I use this set)
Easy to handle, lots of sizes and light

Side chrome - socket set
Heavier stuff + Spart plugs etc

The good thing with these guys is the warranty.
You break anything (using it correctly obviously) and they'll swap it over free.

I've had both sets for about 5 years now and they are still going strong.
The small ratchet is starting to wear out (teeth) so I'll get that swapped over shortly.

The sidchrome handle spins freely but maybe that was because I smacked it with a hammer (whoops).

You will need the 12 sided sockets for ARP nuts and bolts so any engine building will require these bits.

I use the 6 sided ones for those stripped nuts and bolts that the 12 sided cant turn.

The Sidchrome stuff works well in presses etc also.

As for spanners/shifters. I'm using kingchrome

Get yourself the full size and stubby ones.

Also if you have hex nuts, get yourself one of these

SNAPON are the best indeed! but are so expensive its hard to justify!

Teng tools are decent also. They have nice sets available.

My advice is to wait a few months (end of financial year) and pop into a tool store. They always have specials.

This is where I always get my stuff:

Buy some good tools and you'll actually look after them. They'll also last you a long long time over the cheapies

All my 1/4's 3/4's are Supertool longs and shorts combination of long extensions short medium universal and they had the best combination over all + were cheap, made well,(its actually Kingchrome's Budget brand BTW, all made in same factory) great warrentee service centre on my 3/4 racket just popped out took it to a Kingchrome seller replaced with a later model brand spanker no questions asked.
All my impact short and longs all air tools incl. compressor was a super cheap weekend special deal. & metric combo's & rings the rest I have bought as I've run into tasks that require specifics that I don't have all ready eg. 24mm impacts ect. for drive shaft nuts

Most importantly it that you have a range of tools that do the job rather than how much or what brand you buy, I still haven't managed to damage or crack any of my Super Cheap open's and combo's and they were 10.50 a set and made in china they are still going after around 10 years of constant use.

I am a Mecanic so I have to have two sets of tools, one at work one at home, all of them are tax deductable tho! I try to advise against buying a full tool kit unles you really think you will use all of the tools in it, at the end of the day if your just working on your own car sure buy a 3/8 drive socket set etc but you will probly still only use about 5 of the sockets... The biggest problem for me is that I have all the tools I need and am always on the lookout for new innovative tools that make my life easier, like my Sidchrome swivel head ratchet, or the little extention bar that is just inbetween the standard sizes (great for Subaru Spark plugs) I have a bit of everything from Snap On spanners to Kinchrome sockets, to a rattle gun I bought at a trade show that is lighter than any other to hold but still just as powerfull as all the other guys expencive heavy Snap On ones.. All I can say is shop around and really look into what you need and buy quality for the things you will be using a lot. it's nice to have the set but if in reality you will only ever use the one size try and save a $by just getting the one you need.

I shopped around last year for a 1/2" metric socket set to replace my aging Metrinch gear (which was over 15 years old and still going ok apart from the socket wrench). Apart from the KC Pro Am stuff, there was very little around of decent quality (enough to last another 15 years of abuse). I ended up buying a KC Tools metric/ imperial combo, removed the imperial sockets and replacing them with the metric impact sockets I had. So nearly everything I need is on the one case.

I agree with richard about only get what you need,at home i use my newer kinchrome tools and took my old KC tools home.I also use the Saber set. When i got the Zr4 off my nephew and had to replace motor, gearbox, suspension, brakes etc,I did the whole lot with just the 40pc sabre 1/2socket/spanner set and a hand ful of tools.people i know will buy a wheelaround tool box full of right angle spanners and specialist tools with all 10 draws full of their cabinet just to change a battery.
I use the 1/2 drive sockets up to 32mm because cv shafts are 32mm and the gearbox drain is 27mm or 24mm.also the "braker bar" is handy(long handle socket bar).1/4 drive sockets good for hard to get spots like timing cover and sump bolts.
I have rachet spanners at work but i personally dont use them much because they are larger around the ring end and dont fit recessed bolt areas as well as normal ring spanners, also dont undo hard bolts with them.
So end of the story is just get the tools you need for the jobs you will be doing
