hey guys i was just wondering wether i can have my engine runnin less boost than stock coz i wanna have like maybe 5-6 psi as a daily driving pressure just to save the engine/turbo and save on fuel too!

i have a dual stage boost controller so i can just flick the switch and get about 13-14 psi when i need it (smokin' commonwhores and such!)

could i use a different acutator thats designed for smaller lower boost engines or is there a different way?

thanks in advance guys!

kaya. :)

you could probably do it with another actuator, or if u left the wastegate flapper open a little more...but that would mean u'd be losing alot of grunt down low from the leaking gate..

not really worth it mate..
just drive it off boost..
the best method of control is with the right foot!

Aah, the question of boost. It's the timeless question of dual stage, but honestly rather than spending money on parts to achieve this, just adjust your driving behavior, honestly, if you wanna save fuel you will drive sensibly all the time, if you wanna get a move on, you press the "fun" pedal. if your car is standard and isn't running rich "because of exhaust" the fuel economy will be good anyway.

thanks for the advice guys! ill try and not having such a heavy foot all the time! but with driving normally the turbo spools up nearly everywhere i go! even under 2 grand when i take off from the lights granny styles! mind you this was with my old turbo....the new one is an TD05 Big 16g Evo 3 type were as my old one was just a normal biggie! i have heard that the evo 3 ones spool even quicker than the standard big 16?? its because of the turbine scroll being smaller or something, am i right on this or was i being fed shit as i usually do! :p

cheers guys!

have a good one!

if you did change the actuator to run lower than 7psi it would make it even laggier when you wanted to turn the boost up because the wastegate would be opening earlier.

it'd be better to get a higher pressure actuator and learn how to drive it without making boost.

trust me mate! it spools at not even quarter throttle! its bloody crazy! is it maybe coz i have a 3 inch exhaust all the way thru from the 02 sensor housing which is tapered fairly smoothly as opposed to just opened up like normal ones??

cheers!

i doubt it, theoretically, the less back pressure, the faster the spool.

did your old turbo have any cracks in the turbine housing? was the wastegate actuator buggered?

my old turbo has a slight crack in the wastegate hole....hut it wouldnt let any air past it....but that would slow the spool anyway if the crack was big enuff to let air thru!

and yes my throttle is adjusted correctly!

cheers!

Autospeed had some articles on how to run lower than wastegate actuator boost, by venting the blow off valve and basically bleeding off boost. It doesn't stop your turbo from spinning though it just limits the amount of air going into the engine.

You probably could try blocking off part of the intake or exhaust to cause a major restriction, this would limit boost and limit the turbo speed and also limit the power but you probably also would use more fuel whilst driving normally.
