Hi guys,

I took one of my car over the pit last week after getting a yellow stick, and got told by the examiner I had to get rid of the fluttering bov noise. I told the him the car don't have a bov on it, and he said its still causing noise pollution I had to get rid of the noise no matter what....

I just want to clarify somehting, does it meant it's illegal not to have a bov on the car and can't have fluttering noise?

Wae

what it means unfortunately is that the guy is a ****** and wont pass your car until you conform to his interpretation of what is and isn't acceptable. been there with that in the last month or so and won my arguments with facts and verifable information...but it was as easy to solve as your issue

question...how loud is the noise...be honest. if the noise is loud put a bov in there and get her over the pits.

drop by and I will lend you a genuine mitsubishi that should solve the issue

to be honest flutter isnt that good for a turbo anyway and will shorten the life if the turbo.

Just disconnect it to see if that shuts it up.
My wrx one was still noisy without one, it was the big intake and cai and the sound bouncing down the pipe. That's why stock they have all those resonator boxes.

With a exhaust I just jam steel wool into the muffler for inspections.
I don't suggest that for a intake tho. Lol

^haha yes! i was about to chime in but i think i've argued it about 100 times over the years :p

putting the bov back on WILL fix the issue as long as its recirculated, if it's venting to atmosphere you might aswell not bother taking it in

LOL Jack no one is that stupid to jam steel wool in the intake hahahaha. Probs say bye bye to the turbo lol. Anyway did your trick work by jamming steel wool into the muffler for inspections?

Last time my car window tint has a 50cents coin size air bubble, they wont let me pass the inspection. Inspector excuse was *the air bubble could distract you from driving*.......

For the fluttering noise. I ended up doing some welding and putting a stock bov on the pipe. So air is getting recirculated back. ALL GOOD! no more fluttering.

yes the steel wool trick works...

i have in the past used steel wool wrapped in chicken wire and put that into the exhaust. but it is hard to keep in there so

just be careful you don't boost the thing too much as it can spit out the back in a pretty impressive way!!

Hey guys, just reviving this thread. I'm running a Turbosmart Kompact recirc BOV with everything else stock, and I seem to be getting a fluttering sound. I wanted the recirc to be silent and am worried this may damage my turbo or reduce its life. Any input?

Hmmm, the turbo flutter debate. I know where I stand on it, but many argue it doesn't hurt the turbo, Mike Vine being one. Mike has been turboing things for longer than most of us have been alive, he says it (a bov) is only necessary on big applications. There apparently is no quantifiable evidence that turbo flutter has been solely responsible for the demise of a turbo, and realistically I think that is due to there being too many variables. With this opinion two words come to mind, one is stall and the other one is compressor.

Getting to your situation Mike, is it flutter or surge?

DOSE!!! lol

Do what I do, tighten up the BOV so it flutters during low pressures but vents on high pressures

Mike that sounds like a really weird problem to have for that type BOV. I have the same one and don't get that whatsoever they would be the same spring pressure as they aren't replaceable as far as I know. Pull yours out and just double check the valve is able to compress fairly easily (without two thumbs) cause it sounds more like yours isn't bypassing properly...

But if you have a hard pipe and a pod (dunno if you do) it will be noisier. I have a oem metal bov and I can hear it just changing gears around town. As i have the pod and hard pipe, I can just hear the turbo coming to a stop, and also as it spinns up.
Thats what the vacuum/boost line is on the top for. When you back off, is sucks the bov open. The boost pushes a bit too.
Mine goes woosh. I think the fluttery ones have a different design to make the bov bounce

I would call Turbosmart and tell them what's happening. You aren't meant to be getting that sound from the kompact. Also like Benzo has said, check for cracks/leaks anywhere along the setup.
