Hi all,

I am considering changing the turbo and manifold / wastegate on the lancer.. I am wanting a 6boost manifold or something of the like..

Can someone please recommend me a good package that would be ok for general driving without too much lag..

I am thinking of running the new turbosmart 40mm wastegate but unsure as to which turbo to go for?? Target power is 200 - 220kw

Any idea on price for parts needed would be great thanks

Dan

Hi Dan,

For that power level, A Standard EVO III Cast manifold and a TD05H 20g turbo at around 20-22psi will do.

If your going external gate, cant go past tial for vale and performance, and their new gates are water cooled!

found it,

http://www.tialsport.com/NewHotness.html

its the MV-S V2.0.

what a crazy idea. the only reason i could see you needing a watercooled wastegate is if packaging constraints meant the gate would be very close to something that is sensitive to heat.

Yer i have the MVR on the gsr i haven't hooked up the water lines though. really its for track cars to control the temps as heat will change the way the wastegate reacts, cooling it with water will stabilize the temps and giving predictable wastegate reactions..

I just think its americans wanting to put something else on the spec sheet for their turbo supercharged vtec powered fwd mx5's at sema.

external wastegates are a fairly well understood design as such there are clearances for the expansion of the poppet valve and guide for constant use at any temperature your engine could through at it (900deg+). Porsche have been using externals for numerous years in competition racing which are not watercooled without any drama's.

I dont think the watercooling of it would impact its performance in anyway, i may extend its operating life though.

Water ports are not required for operation, but come in handy if you are road racing, the top hat is close to the turbine housing/down pipe or you have an engine bay that doesn't get a lot of airflow.

basically its good for tight packaging.

wonder how much additional impact it could/would have on the cooling system under full load. I know i have had my external glowing red for a long time (30min+)

running those power levels in FWD mode (since its going in a coupe I assume its also fwd) is achievable with a stock big16g, evo1-3 cooler+piping, 3" exhaust and 20psi.

IE no need to waste money on an expensive manifold+wastegate+turbo combo.

Also, why would you want to buy Tial when turbosmart is the same price? Support the locals!

^^ I agree Alex. I think its just another wank factor thing for people with money to spend. It could increase the life expectancy of the xwg diaphram I guess,
but I wonder where exactly the water flows internally and whether the water pressure interferes with the diaphram operation?

A 6boost manifold with a 30/76 a .63 rear and a 38-40mm gate would be perfect in my opinion. I have an evo 7 motor with a tdo5 20g, good dump with 3" exhaust and it reaches full spool about 4100rpm which is alot later than i expected. A 30/76 with a really good manifold should come on full by 3500rpm i would expect.

As everyone has said a TD05H-20G SL2 is awesome and will support upwards of 250kw EASILY.
Why would you slap a massive turbo on the car and unwanted cop attention?
Bolt on is the way of the future.

Anyways Jordo in regards to your Evo 7 motor? WTFFFFFFFFF that is hell lag. 4100rpm from a TD05HR-20G?... has it got the TD06HR-20G SL2 rear wheel too? Something doesnt sound right about your car.
My turbo which is way bigger then a TD05HR-20G - (its an ATP GOLD). is making FB at around 3600rpm and by 4500rpm @ 26psi its got just shy of 200KW ATW.

yeah it probably needs a bit more tuning done, i dont know? it was listed as a td05 20g and he had td06's aswell, maybe got the wrong one?

A few things that are meant to help spool, i experimented with my car and it made a difference even on a small turbo.
Hot gasses spools turbos, so running leaner during spool then tapering down the the chosen on boost arf, as you build pressure.
Running weak timing advance also lets more of the heat out of the cylinder, due to the later ignition, so more heat to spool the turbo. I found my turbo came on harder doing this, but only ran the lower timing just as i was spooling so i didn't sacrifice torque off boost. In the 3500-4000 area.

I was just playing around and it always spooled pretty good. But there was the guy on here who put graphs up on here who has an 68hta on his evo3, went from pretty poor spool for that size turbo on a chipped/jap ecu to not much worse than a 16g with a proper tune. Gained a few hundred rpm.

actually now that i think about ive got an evo 3 style turbo on mine so its a single entry housing. Jstyle i assume you've got the twin scroll housing?

I just fitted this to mine & so far is fantastic. Spool is def slower than my TD05 18g but hits strong. There is a guy on the uS galant forums that has achieved 500+ whp & 130mph trap speeds in a tank VR4. He was running 32 psi & e85 so your goal should be a walk in the park for this turbo. I hope to have mine tuned to 25psi soon.

Its all straight bolt on with exception of the dump. The exhaust housing is a work of art & brings the spool lower than the T3 housing. Full boost approx 3800-4000rpm.
