1) Any disadvantages to simply leaving the lower timing cover off the engine completely? (thus exposing the entire length of the timing belt and so forth)

2) Where in christs name is the timing ground pin? The VFAQ photo is about as useful as tits on a bull.

1) Potential for a small stone/etc to get thrown up into the timing belt and cause it to fail. Also, it's got the scale for setting the ignition timing onit.

2)

You could make the cover a 2 piece unit so you don't have to remove the engine mount (chop it in half, like the 7bolts).

Yup! Pin in circled!!

on my vr4 there are 2 pins there.. i picked the wrong one first time around and did the ground.. walked around and started the car and by the time i poked my nose back around the bonnet there was smoke pouring off my ground wire... lucky it was thin.. hehe..

needless to say i dived for the key VERY quick and tried again once i could touch it

Didn't crack mine at all mate. the timing belt has rubbed a neat little line clean through it on the bottom end of it so I just want to replace it.

There are 4 different lengths of bolt for the lower timing cover - www.vfaq.com has a diagram to get them all in the right places.

On one of mine the water pump pulley/belt has cut right through the cover.

I have a 2g cover. there are only 2 types of bolts. I labelled them as they came off and put them back on in sequence so yeah. (Deliberately leaving out the bolt that's wedged behind the waterpump)

Have you already got a new cover Lawrence?
They are quite exxy to get new hey.
Just wondering where you got your's from?

Cheers. :)

No mate, I am still looking. George is going to hunt around at work for me tomorrow and we'll see what happens.

Mine is fubar.

I do however have a brand new tensioner enroute. Hopefully be here tomorrow.
