Hey guys, its been 4 months since the last 'update on cars' thread was made, just thought we should have another one to see whats going on amongst the Team4G crew.......

DIE STI is about to have a fidanza alloy flywheel and exedy 3puk ceramic button clutch installed, which will hopefully eliminate my slow shifting issues i've had since i've owned the car. Ive also got a shortshifter being made up by mikey- www.v6lancer.com

The amp to run my sub arrived today, so my car audio thats been sitting here gathering dust for 9 months will eventually be put in by Arthur (VR4PWR) in the next week or 2.

System consists of:

Pioneer DEH-D8650MP, 12 disk stacker
Infinity Perfect 6.1 components
Infinity Perfect 5.1 components
JL 12W6V2 sub
Rockford Fosgate P8004 amp (components)
Rockfor Fosgate P6001 amp (sub)

I'm also looking into a re-tune along with another map to be made for racing, 110 octane unleaded.

Along with some more power and the removal of some heavy items from my car, im fairly confident that a mid 12 can be cracked as long as everything goes to plan, which never really seems to happen hehe.

Ill keep you guys posted, now what about you other guys???????? :D:D:D

Im looking at you here bazeng

lol

ah you know how it is dre..

same old thing..
my flywheel doesn't fit
thats about it

fidanza hey?
where u getting it from?

550 from xtreme clutch and brake
(spoke to them yesterday)

they go for 300 USD (around $390 AUD)
but that excludes shipping (around 3.9kg's)

but good choice!..
it supposably will allow you to spool faster (due to faster revving) and also not that much harder to drive..

ask dino where he's at!!!
rego'd yet mate?

don't be so sure that will fix it dre

i just got a new clutch put in (tame - exedy full face organic with HD pressure plate), and the flywheel machined.. still crunches on fast changes

Changes:

New clutch (jon-spec haha), flywheel etc.
Last of the suspension has been fitted (swaybars)... car now actually handles at the stock ride height.
RS Bonnet fitted
Some minor mechanical things fixed
Couple of in-cabin switches replaced

Damn that was exciting.
I'll post a pic of my car later on today. It's a mess. :(

Had to go pick a mate up who got bogged for lack of a better word 50km down a bush track out here :D (So naturally I enjoyed myself there... and back. Then we went out with a 4x4 and winched his car out :p)

Ebay stores for a start. One trader reguarly has them for $194. Can get u a list of workshops later (theyre 10-20 more than ebay stores) but for now I have to get to work.
Diamond Star Specialists sell ACT flywheels for $250

Sounds good Dre!

C'mon Baz, get cracking!

As for me? well its been a productive week!

The GSR was registered finally last friday after 14months in my posession!
I've actually owned the car since June '04, and it finally saw Vic Rego and roads in August '05! Hows that for a slow build? I guess it takes time when you have to factor in costs, and also in doing it yourself. Would be nice to just drop it off somewhere with a shopping list, and pick it up in a month, but alas, I didn't have the spare $10k extra needed! :p

Car rego went through smoothly, and GSR is now full registered and legal with the 4G63 2litre in it, all recorded on Vicroads computers etc, so wrapt with that!

Spent all day road tuning the Haltech with Ben from RacePace, and god damn that man is a gun! The car was drivable with the tune that Adam from JEM did before it left the previous owner I bought it from in its previous incarnation, but on average Ben pulled out around 20% of fuelling across the board, which is why it was chewing fuel over the last week, but not going anywhere!
Fuelling AF mixtures was in the 11's and 12's contantly according to his DD Wideband O2 sensor, so he adjusted them to more usuable numbers.

Not much performance stuff was done apart from setting the correct ignition timing, and adjusting idle to be as close to perfect as possible. We spent most of the day driving around and just adjusting the driveability and economy of the car, as any idiot can tune for outright power, but the skill comes in to trying to make it behave like a factory ECU on startup, and cruising around town, traffic etc which is now does, so i'm very happy!

Boost was increased to 14.5psi via the HKS EVC4 and all fuelling was checked to make sure they were safe right through the rev range, which they are with no signs of knock which was great. I'm going to leave it at 14.5psi for a little while and put some more k's on the motor (only done 600km's since full rebuild) and enjoy it a little before winding in around 20psi on the dyno later in the year. Feels strong on the road, but not as quick as I would have liked, but time will tell as i'm more concerned with reliability than I am outright power.
Be interested to do a power run soon as well as a 1/4 and see what she does currently!

*whew* There is my essay to bring you all up to speed! :)

are you sure? does your car crunch in every gear only at high rpm?

mine does

Baz, check THIS out mate :D $79 USD for shipping, so thats $268 USD all up which is about $350 AU delivered. So your saving around $200 on the local prices......

Changes:

New KYB rear shocks
Ricey boost guage
Hankook silica front tyres. (including wheel balance)
Fixed loose wheel bearings.
Changed over power steering sump which cracked.

Thats about it. Lsd is on the way (after i pay my speeding fines) and then a minor boost increase. New injectors too. Maybe a cut and polish aswell

Cheers,
Nick

so so so cheap!!

i got my flywheel issue sorted..
getting it machined / ring gear used from a stock flywheel
costing me $120.00 + balancing..

its still cheaper but im still not happy .. should have been right from the start

dino! sounds awesome!!!

dre, your crunching sounds like syncro problems mate..

ill do a writeup of whats been happening with mine later tonight..

took some new pics =)

okay
have some time to sit and type

update:

Uni has been pretty busy so i haven't had much time at all to do anything, what has been done is

- completed engine, its now bolted up
- wired up and all plugged in

came up with a few problems, the flywheel i purchased was actually about 5mm larger in diametre than it should have been (reason, FWD vs AWD)
anyway, that problem is being resolved atm.

we tried to fit the gearbox up, but for some reason it didn't clear the bellhousing.. thought we were doing something wrong, or that the box was too small..
made a few calls, found out the size was wrong..
so decided to just bolt up the engine without the box..

here are some pics:

Modified Oil Filter Housing (sits further from the dump pipe, about 5cm's away.. had to get fitting made up from an engineer, note no water jacket, will be using a relocation kit which is fitting but no pics atm)

polyurathne%20engine%20mount.jpg

Polyurathane REAR engine mount (custom)

custom%20brake%20lines.jpg

Non ABS brake lines (CUSTOM.. made em myself =) hope it works)

gsr%20exhaust%20manifold.jpg

as you can notice, its using a GALANT GSR exhaust manifold..
reason.. N/A POWER!!!..

nah, jk.. will be running it in without a turbo
but it actually looks pretty cool!!

got my oil filter relocation kit fittings FINALLY!!.. just gotta do the oil lines

and lastly, bolted up my strut brace

will probably get it painted while waiting for the flywheel to come in from the states.. (about 2 weeks??)

and some proper engine bay pics
im really glad that theres an engine in my engine bay!!!

its been without one for around 2 years!!

Front%20View.jpg

NOTE: RS bumper =)... only primed though

intake%20manifold%20side%20engine%20bay.jpg

note: stock ignition system, for now. also stock loom .
also note, damn fuel line from the rail to the regulator is too short!!!.. gotta remake that line.

Side%20View%20engine%20bay.jpg

Wheres the gearbox?!?!?.. oh the flywheel is too big dammit..

for some reason the engine bay seems really really empty
we were able to rotate the engine in the engine bay a complete 360 degrees!!!!.. reason why we had to rotate, i bolted up the rear engine mount upside down, lol.. TWICE!!.. a tip. FOCUS when working on cars..

anyways, im hoping for it to be complete by the end of the month (bolting in, painting anyway). as for running in and tuning.. i've organised a sponsor.. i will reveal who they are when they finish tuning the car..

hopefully it'll be ready for that drag day..
if not, ill take my swift

1

well aftering hitting the wall we needed to pull the motor out to get the body work done. 2000 (have been told it was a 5000 job by the panel beater )later the body is straight and painted. The motor rebuilt minus balance shafts, new turbo, inj cooler and everything is in!!! just have to get the micro tech hooked up properly and tune it.

I beg to differ, its not really crunching as such, its more like not letting me engage the gear at high rpm. Ive had 3 people cast their views on the matter, and they all reccomended changing the clutch. If all else fails, it'll be new g/box time, but that'll come with a rebuild.

Thats a good idea, what about the exhaust?

Are you going to make a font pipe up?

bazeng said:

You should take the middle bits out! More air flow getting in.

Hey, do you still want that grille?

top secret huh? was this sponsorship done via talking or did you write up a sponsorship agreement?

It better be ready for this drag day mate! I wanna see a 12 outta the box :D

Keep the good work up mate!

p.s ill bring that grille on thursday night

dre

yo dre,

the engine pipe is stock also
basically ill be running a stock exhaust

im already running a stock cat back =)
(remember what i showed ya dre??... shhhhhh dont tell anybody)

as for sponsorship, i've dealt with them in the past and they remember the car

i just explained to them what im going for and they basically said when all is done, bring it by and clear up the final details.

zr4 grill.. yeah bring it thursday!!

hmm... dino, do you think dre's problem could be the pivot ball???
(maybe its worn and its not letting the fork move enough)

as for the cutting of the bumper, nah.. i want to keep it stock.. no chop chop..

lets hope i can make it..
even if its still being run in..
ill run in N/A

Barry's gonna be building a new engine....

Running a turbo engine in N/A then strapping on the turbo is among the easiest ways to throw a bearing/etc. I can provide you with all the engineering crap to go with that if you want, i'd have to chase it up in our engineering faculty tho.

You could of course just ask any of the mech-eng teachers at uni :) Or anyone involved in SAE.

a lot of US guys do it

means that no little bits of metal from the engine machining process dont blow up that new turbo. ill just be running a filter in the oil line

well dre, my clutch was replaced, flywheel machined, gearbox pulled apart and put into a new gearbox housing, and my pivot ball was checked..

les suggests that everything is in good nick - i didn't need new synchros or anything.

redline has been in there, made no difference, les put his favourite shell oil in there but that made no difference either. :?

it's still tricky to get into 1st while stationary, crunches into 2nd 90% of the time, seems to work if you (bad explanation here) pull the shifter to the right hand side of 2nd gear as you are putting it in 2nd, the same goes with 3rd. i'm driving it tonight.. i'll try and figure out if it's an rpm thing (been a while since i've driven it - i've forgotten  )
