VAREX

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

Cons, not everyone wants a baked bean can hanging off the rear, they look SHITE

They don't look too bad at all in oval. No resonators = the way it should sound. Quiet when you need/want it- can you get any better??

Yes they prohibit flow but in doing so they reduce noise and you dont have some dicky looking chrome tip hanging off your car and cops look for varex because you can see them

^ Still not legal and the EPA inspectors will find it, then your back where you are now, defected and off the road, your wasting your time and money man....

EPA inspectors will find your 3" non Varex muffler and dick you for that anyway- so lets all go get stock exhausts shall we?

I think some of you guys are missing the point- these mufflers are AWESOME for turning your aftermarket (loud) exhaust into a quiet one at the press of a button. Sure- they're not legal, but they key is not getting pulled over/sighted for loud exhaust in the first place. That's where these come in handy!

Everyone has their opinion as to what looks good and what doesn't as far as design of the actual muffler is concerned, but after owning 1 Varex and about 10 other aftermarket mufflers, I can tell you that the Varex shits all over the rest.

if you really dont like the look of the bloody thing, mount the Varex in the middle of the car (if you have the space, but if your an AWD mitsu.. then probably not) then shove a muffler of your choice on the end...... best of both world.... not big and ugly but it works... also harder to find..

I agree with you Dre, they are a good muffler for all the reasons you state, I even have one on the Mrs GSR.... BUT - in Aarons case, who has been done twice for noisy exhaust( due to his hang out locations!) I'm trying to make the point to him, that it's not a solution to his problem as the inspectors know what to look for and the same for his butterfly valves(variflow?)

Isn't there some OEM exhausts that open up the same or similar way? I'm pretty sure BMW have a variable exhaust on some of their cars - automatically opens a second outlet or something when you boot it - quite a difference in noise, but proably still within the legal limit.

^^^ yeah there are OEM stepper motor controlled butterflies in the Commodore W400 that opens up the butterfly the more rpm you give it. Problem is thats its OK for them to use that system because they OEM fitted. From memory Clause 18 section i) and ii) of the Protection of the Environment (Noise) Regulation states that you cannot fit any temporary noise control device to the vehicle and the i) and ii) states something about unless its otherwise fitted by the manufacturer. OEM cars with them can have them.... other than that we cant fit any sort of noise control device in our exhaust exhaust system, even if we're trying to do the right thing. The Legislation simply prohibits it. I wrote about it and quoted the clause in a previous Varex thread somewhere in this forum.
As a Varex owner myself, when the butterfly is closed and redirecting through the 2" hole, I cant even come on boost! Not that you really want to when restricting it as whole purpose is to be incognito sound-wise when you want to be (late nights, high pedestrian activity areas etc...) And for that the Varex is ideal. I open it up on the highways and lesser populated areas around my house and close it when entering suburbia.
To the guy who has been done by the DECC before - You have to be extremely careful. They take photographs of your exhaust system once you have been defected. Then when you have it repaired to run quieter and pass the noise test, they take photos of the complying exhaust system and place it on file for 7 years. This is where you are told that if you ever change your system from then on you must notify the DECC and undergo another test. If you change your system and get failed by the DECC again, they cross-reference the complying system photographs to your existing setup and ascertain if you have committed an offence/tampered with the complying system. You fill find that your new fine will increase dramatically from something like $500 or so to much much more for a second or third offence.

I agree with Dre here, you can't go past a varex..Living in units i can have mine shut until i get out on the road before opening it up and hearing it idle full noise. Stops neighbours getting pissed off at the noise late at night and early mornings.
Just today alone i had to shut it 3 times driving past popo and didn't even get followed :)

Basically anything aftermarket won't pass the magic 90dB noise limit (NOT EVEN A JASMA MUFFLER). So if you're going to get busted might as well do it in style!

I actually emailed the EPA months ago regarding the Bi-MOdal exhausts that are factory fitted to BMW, PORSCHE, AUDI and HSV vehicles. Asking how can thye be legally fitted as OEM, That the porsche has adjustments for the Bi-MOdal inside the cabin and that everything stated within the guidelines states that it can nto be a temporary device.

Unfortunately they never got back to me. I can only assume that it can be legal for the following reasons:

Bi-Modal open or closed passes Noise Tests (If adjustable in cabin)
Bi-Modal is closed upto and above the noise test limit depending on exhaust back pressure and engine requirements and is NON ADJUSTABLE in cabin to pass noise tests

Bazeng has a thread on one i think, can nto remember the manufacturer, But basically, you can get a 3" Bi-Modal piece of exhaust, fit it to yours and run a vaccuum line off it, They it will open with pressure and i think it retains 2.5psi of back pressure at all times?

The better one that Bazeng fitted has a control unit so you can set RPM, VACCUUM and Throttle position to allow it to open. You may have better luck having one of these pass EPA inspection thana Varex. But EPA has to confirm how you can make it legal if its offered standard on many vehicles.

I have a oval one sitting in my garage, unfortunately its a single tip and I want to get a dual tip, time for some more exhaust shopping! Having heard one in action I reckon they are great, not an alternative to a stock/quiet exhaust, but gives you some of that balance back.

Let me know how much you want for it :)

even the tin can doesnt look too bad either....
