hi guys and girls iv'e got a lancer gsr 93 model i got a vibration throughout the car when i'm in gear and i back of from the acclerator not when i'm rolling in neutral just wondering if any uses have come across this problem and how to fix it thanks

so your car vibrates when your on the accelerator but not when ur rolling ? is it a bad vibration? which part of the car is it comming from? any more symptons ?

Jon

jon:it vibrates when you back of the accelerator. its not that bad of a virbration. feels like it coming it underneath of centre consloe im tipping my tailshaft to the rear diff could be faulty one other thing the cops a lot of launches

I have that vibration at 3000RPM backing off or not its the air vent rubbing on the intrusion bar under the dash.....but.....yours could be different too.....check driveline.

On another note is the CAT rubbing on the propshaft?

That could be it too....

sounds like a your balancer shaft is out..
they can be out by 360 degrees
ask darren at afas

If it was the balance shafts the motor wouldnt hit boost and also it would vibrate thru the whole rev range not just backing off..

My guess would be that its got something to do with ur transfer case and ur tailshaft.. check the cv joint on your tailshaft.. that could be the problem.

4G93s don't have balance shafts so it can't be that.

I would look for freeplay with the tail shaft. It sits in a bearing that may have gone/worn out. Thats the round thing that the shaft goes through and bolts to the car. Its got a name but I can't thing of it :?

Also check for worn engine mounts or gearbox mounts. Under a launch/hard acceleration situtaion the engine will move a lot in the mounts. If those mounts are warn it could be twisting a little too much and causing the exhaust/cat to rub on something. This could also have lead to premature wear on the tail shaft hanger bearing. There is a lot of room around the tail shaft so it would take a lot of twisting to get it rubbing on the body work.

Also check your exhaust mount rubbers, if they have gone then there is a good chance its that thats rubbing/vibrating.

Hopefully its one of these easy to fix problems.

i get that too! lol

as jstyles said, its probably your transfer case/tailshaft.

what wheels tyres are you using - are they balanced and thread wear evenly?

reason i ask is since borrowing another members' set of wheels, the noise has DRAMATICALLY reduced.

It can't be out by 360 degrees. That means it woul be perfect.

The most it can be out is 180.

My car was out by 180 and it vibrated over 3000 rpm didn't matter what you were doing (accel, deccel, neutral)

First thing to check - quick & easy - has any oil leaked out of your transfer case/ right angle drive. Have a look underneath for any oil around that area or pull the fill bolt out and try to squirt some in.

My transfer case ran low one time and that was the symptom that I got.

I don't think its balance shaft related as the vibration would be there all the time, not just on deceleration.

Other things it could be (some of which seem to be common on vr4's):
- output shaft from gearbox to transfer case - spline worn.
- cross pin in centre diff worn (if you apply light throttle while its vibrating, then this is most likely your culprit).
- rear roll stopper worn.
- intercooler or exhaust rubbing on something when engine twists under deceleration.

vibration

Ok vibration at 3000rpm when backing of means you can rul out anything to do with the gearbox, most propshaft noises are consistent (if not less noticable at all rev ranges. However the center bearing remains a possibility(because its holding the drive shaft it is usually louder at low rpm and smooths out towards high rpm unless really stuffed). Another possiblity is your steering rack. When the bearings are worn they are completely un-noticable until braking. Usually resulting in a vibration going through the car.
If you have a mate who is pretty switched on with cars get him to check these out (all can be checked while under the car) as these are the cheaper things to replace.
I know what its like to replace expensive stuff that didnt fix the problem.
:D :D :D
cheers dave

it sounds to me exactly like the tail shaft hanger bearing.

i've had it with all of my 4WD mitsi's quite common if they have done a hard 120,000kms+

easy way to check, get under the car in between the front and rear doors, grab hold of the tail shaft before or after the bearing, which bolts to the chassis of the car, wiggle it up and down, if it moves more than 10-15mm its stuffed.

general symptoms are, vibration under acceleration and deceleration, no virbation at constant speed, vibration can sometimes go away under acceleration high in the rev range. more pronounced in second and third gear.

if it is that, its a reasonably easy fix, replace the bearing...
