Video - Leaking fuel? + some other questions

G'day everyone, i just have a question or 3 about my GSR

I've uploaded this video to youtube which helps explain the situation a bit better

1 - The main question is, today i noticed a small puddle of petrol after my car has been sitting about 4 days. It must be dripping quite slowly, because i watched it for awhile but it didn't drip at all. However, once i turned the key to ON and i heard my fuel pump make that noise it always makes, it started dripping a bit faster, maybe once every 2 seconds or so. Once i started the engine though, about 5 seconds later the dripping stopped completely. I'm thinking its probably a seal, but could it be time for a new fuel pump, or is there something else it could be?

2 - The other questions i had, firstly i'm just wondering if that noise the fuel pump makes is normal, it's a mechanical sounding noise and goes for about 2 seconds after i turn the key to ON. It's always done it, but i never bothered to ask anybody about it.

3 - And lastly, when i rev the engine, you might notice the revs drop down slightly under the idle speed just for a second, and it sounds/feels like its on its way to being close to stalling. Is this something to do with the idle speed controller, or something else?

1 - whereabouts is it leaking from, what part of the fuel line/delivery system?

If theres a fitting on the fuel line that attaches to the pump like there is on the filter, it may just be loose and in need of a good tightening ..... some of the guys on here will have a better idea than i do..


2 - yes, AFAIK, mine is pretty loud too.

Ah cheers, yeah i had a good look underneath but to be honest i wasn't entirely sure what i was looking at

I'm going to have another look tomorrow and see if anything has happened over night, and if it has leaked again, i'll turn the car on and try to really see where its dripping from before it stops, that should at least narrow the problem down a bit

u want want to jack the car up a bit so u can see a bit more start it up and have a mate reving it like u were while ur looking at it. jst dont put ur hands up near anything exhausts get pretty hot, trust me.

my fuel pump always makes a noise when the key is set to on.

same wif the idel, if may need some adjustment im not sure. mine does it sometimes nearly stalls if reved higher.

1. The fuel pump is inside the fuel tank and its not the cause of your leak. Looks to me like its the fuel feed line from the fuel pump cradle to where it meets up with the solid tubing under the car as the rubber hose could be split or damaged.

Jack the car up and have a look for some small metal tube fuel lines that run under the car on the drivers side from the firewall to under the rear seat before the fuel tank- you cant miss them. At the end of those lines you will see rubber hoses and clamps. Check that the clamps havent cut into the hose and also check that the hose isnt damaged. If you cant see anything wrong there then take note of where the rubber hoses run, vertically up and over the fuel tank where they join up to a screw in connection, which in turn connects to the outlet on top of the fuel pump cradle. Check that length of rubber hose from the bottom of the car first as its the easiest part to check and most probably your culprit

If those hoses look cool, then remove the bum section of the rear seat so you can see the floor and fuel pump inspection plate (its the plate on the drivers side under the back seat). Remove the 4 screws on the floor and you will see the top of the fuel pump cradle and several hoses. Visually inspect that fuel also isnt leaking from any of the hoses or around the rim of the cradle as if it wasnt put in right or isnt dead flat it would leak.

Also, lets now inspect the threaded connection that goes down to the metal tubing that I mentioned earlier. Look at the long metal piping coming off the top of the fuel pump cradle and going toward the driver's side rear door. Grab a torch and shine that way and you will see that it connects to a screw in connection. If that screw in connection isnt tightened properly it can also leak, so tighten it up. When people upgrade fuel pumps they usually undo the threaded connection to remove the cradle from the tank in order to install the pump, and if they dont tighten that screw in connection properly afterwards, or damage the rubber hose whilst doing it they can experience fuel leaks like you are experiencing now.

2. Sounds a bit like a Walbro fuel pump in which case its probably normal :lol:

3. A fuel leak will be causing a small loss of fuel pressure in the system so that can be why your idle sits slightly below at first then rises as the FPR makes up for it.

off topic but how come it takes so long for the car to crank and start? that shouldnt be too good for the starter motor right?

I think the idle looks fine to me.... Edit: Actually, when the engine is cold, it should be idling around 1,500rpm and slowly drop until warm when its suppose to sit around 750rpm +- 100rpm (mines sitting at 1,000 :S). As for the drop in rev's, looks ok to me, I would not worry.

You need to fix that fuel leak, that would be the first thing to do.

Well i checked under the back seat, there is a black plate on the passenger side, and just an area for a plate on the drivers side (i think maybe the plate is missing)

Anyway i can see the hoses and they all look fine, i noticed around the carpet that there is this kind of greasy stuff on the underside of it, it doesn't smell like fuel or anything, not sure if its normal though..

Anyway, next ill check under the car, i've just been waiting for my mate to stop borrowing my jack and jack stands

Are you sure you have a GSR?? :shock: As far as I am aware all AWD EVO's and GSR's have 2 inspection plates under the back seat. The one behind the driver's side is for the fuel pump.

Oh sorry i should clarify, i meant it has both holes, but only one is covered by the plate, i think the other plate was taken off and never put back on

It has the 4 screws there for the plate just like the other side anyway, and it looks exactly the same shape, so i'm assuming the plate is just missing
